Master 2571 Tiger's Den | Subject: RE: Full IM - a lifestyle choice or a "one-and-done?" I've only done one, but fully trained for two (injury during taper). It's a lifestyle choice. I plan to do many more, but not until my life situation is where I can devote the hours needed for training for that distance. (soon to be mom- adopting) I plan to be that 65 year old woman who Kona qualifies with a 15 hour finish! |

Extreme Veteran 353 Randleman, NC | Subject: RE: Full IM - a lifestyle choice or a "one-and-done?" Lifestyle. We triathletes have a unique perspective. The vast majority of us are not podium athletes so why do we do it? To get better, set new PR's, hang out with friends with a like mindset and hopefully influence someone along the way to say "I can do that". IM was a goal in the lifestyle. Now, I want to get my back healed and incoporate something in the lifestyle (probably more yoga) that will keep the bulging disc issues at bay. Accomplishing that, it will be back to chasing a faster OLY time, faster HIM time, more efficiency on the bike and swim and yes, another IM. |

Coach 10487 Boston, MA | Subject: RE: Full IM - a lifestyle choice or a "one-and-done?" I made triathlon and endurance sports my lifestyle and that covers different events and distances. I haven't done an IM just because it hasn't peak my interest and because I chose to spend more time trying to improve at the 70.3 distance. I always figured I could try to go fast and eventually I would get older and I could jump to go longer. I am going for a KQ slot this year at RI 70.3 and if that doesn't happen most likely I'll do one next year (prob IMLP). In the end, I don't know how many IM I'll do, time will tell. |

Champion 10154 Alabama | Subject: RE: Full IM - a lifestyle choice or a "one-and-done?" S/B/R is a hobby. "Racing" (or in my case "participating") in organized events is purely entertainment/recreation. Certainly an iron distance requires a more focused effort....but if s/b/r is a part of your life, turning up the gain to prepare for a race is not that big of an undertaking. I think IM is way over-rated. It's just a race for cryin' out loud!! I've got a buddy of mine who is 12 months into a 15 month tour in Iraq. This is his 4th tour in the middle east. He is a soldier and soldiering is his lifestyle. I don't equate s/b/r to a lifestyle....it's a hobby....it's fitness...it's recreation.... ~Mike Edited by Rogillio 2009-04-23 8:56 AM |

Master 1989 New Jersey | Subject: RE: Full IM - a lifestyle choice or a "one-and-done?" I would say for most people on this forum it's a lifestyle. I'm training for IM #1 - I have no idea if #2 or 3 or 4 is in my future. But regardless, I'll still do tri's, and marathons, and road races and simple group rides...something! I would think the once-and-done people simply follow some coach, check off the IM item on their bucket list and don't worry about learning more by reading up on forums. |

Pro 3906 Libertyville, IL | Subject: RE: Full IM - a lifestyle choice or a "one-and-done?" Training for endurance athletics (and hopefully improvement) is really the lifestyle. To me, the race just fills in the blanks on what to train when. Taking my second crack at MOO this year but will probably put the full distance aside for a while after as the lil ones are getting not so little and deserve less of daddys time on the bike. Probably will do halfs and south, marys and whatever else I feel like for a few years but plan on dusting off the IM distance again down the road. Ask me tomorrow though! Ha. The constant is the training to be ready for anything. |

Not a Coach 11473 Media, PA | Subject: RE: Full IM - a lifestyle choice or a "one-and-done?" I think I'm mostly with birkie & Mike on this. Ironman is not a lifestyle to me. It's a race (well, really it's a brand, but I assume we are talking about the race distance here). I've done one and will likely do more. I swim, bike and run as part of my lifestyle. I race because I enjoy the competition. I do Ironman because its a challenging race which I enjoy. But so are marathons...and half-irons...and 5k runs... |
