Just wondering what you folks who have completed or plan to complete a full IM approach the big race.Is it a lifestyle choice that you've made, and you intend to continue with for at least several years?Or is it a "one-and-done" for you? (Even though you may still be competing in shorter races.)

I'm training for my first, IMWI. It's a lifestyle choice. I don't see it as a check off the life list sort of thing, but I think it is for a lot of people. It's a huge accomplishment that many likely just want to experience.

Although I've completed 2.9 IM (yes, 9 miles short of 3) in the last 3 years (2 more scheduled this summer), I made the lifestyle choice over 30 years ago when I started endurance sports.  Competing in Ironman is just another part of the journey.

First IM this summer, skipped HIM season due to new baby etc and went for it just because I don't think I'll be able to get the same time volume next year (or the next few years after that).

But I'd like to think we'll do one every 3-5 years, and keep doing Olys or other races during the summer every year. It's nice to have a purpose to all the workouts (and justify all the new equipment!). I don't think I could just slog it out on the treadmill for 3-4 hours a week with no objective goal.

Using Birkie's standard, i've done 1 and 1/140, but I've shown up fully trained for two.   Lifestyle?  I dunno about that.  I do intend to train for at least the HIM distance every year.  And although I told myself I wasn't doing another until 2010, I am eyeing a November IM.

Once you do one, they are kind of addicting......

With a 1 year old at home and more than likely a second coming next summer I believe this will be my first and last for quite a while. I am doing IMLOU this year and although you never know I have a feeling I will take a few years off of the full and wait until time frees up a little more. I will still do sprints, oly's, and HIM because those are easier. But who knows. A couple years ago I thought I would never do a full and here I am.

I've done one every year since 2003.  I consider it a healthy lifestyle for me as I have horrible family genetics when it comes to cardiovascular health.  It's also a great escape from work, stress etc.  I love everything about it, the challenge, the people I meet, the volunteers' support, the positive energy it creates, the cool finisher's shirts, etc...

"Lifestyle choice or one-and-done"? Neither. I will do them for as long as I want, can, and able to. I'm much more about the training, that is the lifestyle choice I make. The races are secondary to that.

Great question, as I have been wondering the same thing.  I want to do one for sure, but I don't know if I could see doing them over and over again....?  Guess it's something you can only decide once you get to that point.

I'm approaching my peak training month for IMCDA.  Depending on how May goes and how the race goes, I may sign up for another (won't be IMCDA in '10 for sure.

Depends on what day you ask me!

After getting the first one done, I thought I was satisified and didn't NEED to do another.  I was done with the training...

However, I was always open to the possibility of doing it again.  Fast forward 4 months later and the new IM Utah opened up?  I signed up!  So I'm good for 2010.

THEN I can quit (until the bug bites again and the next race comes along....).

Training for number 1 in August and it is a lifestyle.  I won't be any good at it for a number of years anyway so it can't really be a one and out.  I mean where is the fun in that and what would you do with the expensive bike and shrinkwrap clothing?

Triathlon is the lifestyle,  140.6 is just another distance to try out.

Probably one and done (the first is IMCOZ this Nov) b/c we're going to start trying for a family after that ... and newborns + IMs don't mix very well !

For the full it's kinda of a one and done for me this year.  If I fail I'll have to wait a few more years to get another shot so I gotta make it count in 2009.  But I'll stay active in tri's as a life style and still try to do at least one half iron every year as I enjoy the distance.

I'm training now for my 2nd and I intend to do more, eventually. I'm not doing another right away next year, but I said that last year too.

mr one and done here... {training for my 2nd} as long as its fun I"ll keep training, and do some races while I'm at it..

I know that my boredom threshold is usually around 4 yrs for things,, before this I was really into hot box yoga and Volleyball for years.     So while I might not race an IM every year, or when time and cash are present.  I'm sure i"ll be doing something active.

Thought it was a "one and done" but seeing as I have just completed my second and planning on my third it might just be a lifestyle...

I distinctly remember on the run during my first IM telling myself I have to finish because I am never doing an IM again.

I'm doing my 6th one this summer.  So I guess its a lifestyle.  But now I have a close group of friends who share the lifestyle.
