Run
Comments: It was really crowded to start with. We were all walking until we got through the gate. It was a champion chip race, so got to here all the beeps as we passed over the mats. I was dodging people everywhere at the beginning of the race, and from behind I could hear the Fort Worth Police Cadets running to cadance. They overtook me about 1/2 mile in. I really wish I could have kept up with them. It was so fun listening to their cadance, not to mention the guy in the back had some MIGHTY nice legs on him. By about the 3/4 mile mark it hard cleared out enough that I didn't have to dodge anymore, and I could just run. When we hit the first mile mark, I looked at my watch and saw that I wasn't hitting my secretly wanted pace (10:30/mile). I wasn't surprised, so I just told myself 11 minute miles...thats what I want 11 minute miles. The second mile went by quickly. I was starting to pass a bunch of people who had started running too fast in the beginning and were walking it the rest of the way in. At mile marker 2, I did the internal check, and decided I had some juice in me, and that i needed to kick up the pace for the last mile. I was running faster, my breathing was harder, but I was holding it pretty well. Then it all went sour. At about 2.75 miles, for the first time ever, I got a stitch under my rib on the right. It hurt so bad. But then, I started getting a side stitch on my left, so that distracted from the pain on the right for a little bit. It hurt so bad...I was starting to curl in on myself to help ease the pain. I kept telling myself if there was ever a race that I didn't want to walk on this was the one. For a millisecond I thought about the pain that Lisa & Jayden endured. I pushed that away quickly though. Unfortunatly that line of thinking didn't save me. I wound up slowing down, see if that would help, still curled up on myself. Finally I had to drop to a walk. I took deep breaths, and forced myself to stand straight. As soon as the rib stich subsided I started running again. I'd run until the stich got to bad, then walk until I could stand up straight again. Finally I got to the last corner. It was about .15 miles to the finish. I put everything I had into my legs, and just ran. I caught up to this kid, and just before I went to pass him, he saw me, and kicked it up a gear. I tried to match him, but I couldn't. I crossed the finish line, and hit my stopwatch. 33:04! Not bad. I made my 11 min miles. But WAIT. There was an extra .1 miles tucked in there, so ACTUALLY I came within a gnats ass of the pace I wanted to run. Officially it was a 10:36/mile. Just an extra :06/mile. I'll take it and I'm darned happy with it! You would think withthe whole anal engineer thing I have going for me, I would have already calculated the time I would have had to hit for a 10:30 pace, including the .1 miles....but I had just guesstimated. My splits are: 10:44/10:49/10:46/0:46 So the mile I walked on wasn't even my slowest mile. Guess its a good thing I kicked it up a notch at the beginning of it. Then of course that last .1 mile was super fast cause I was sprinting with whatever I had left. Yeah and SOMEHOW I managed to come in 13th in my age group. And there was no Athena group here. 13th???? WTF???? Thats like a MOP. I'm not a MOPer, I'm a BOPer. You mean I might actually be a MOPer somewhere???? How cool is that? I set up a group run with some of the girls there today. They all competed in an adventure race together a few years back, and have all since gotten married and had babies. So...with them all pushing their baby joggers, I might actually be able to keep up :) Hopefully having running partners will help me get my running groove back! This was a very special race for me. It had so much meaning to it. I was sad and thinking about Lisa and Jayden all yesterday, and leading up to the race. Once I got to the start line, it just turned into a race for me and I was able to push everything else back. This was the 9th annual running of the Victory Over Violence 5k. I'll be running it every year in the future. Post race
Warm down: Stood around and talked with everyone I knew. I got everyone to sign the back of my shirt. I'll be washing this shirt, then hanging it up in my room. I won't be wearing this one again. What limited your ability to perform faster: Stupid stitch in the rib & side. And you know what, it was gone when I did the last sprinty session. I may have to see if sprinting will get rid of the stitch. Speed up instead of slow down! Last updated: 2005-04-09 12:00 AM

Stopped off at Boopas to get a Boopa *grin*. Chewed on that while I drove to the race. I got a wonderful surprise phone call wishing me luck on my race today and telling me to run hard. VERY motivating.
Of course I got there WAY early, because well, I'm an anal engineer...I saw my friend (another anal engineer, John) when I got there. I hadn't talked to him in a long time so we chatted while I waited for everyone else to walk up. Finally it was race time, and I was getting major butterflies. Its just a 5k I mean, come on....but I was getting all jumpy and nervous about it! I made sure that Holly had someone to walk with, and I headed to the start line.
