| hey, i just recently bought my first tri bike, it's a 2008 caliente (pictures will come soon!). i'm not sure what to do about the water bottles, it seems that putting regular brackets on the downtube would sort of defeat the purpose of having it aero in the first place. i've been thinking that mounting cages behind the seat would be the best way to go? i am looking at the profile design rm1 saddle mount, anyone use this before or have any other suggestions? how much does weight on these real factor in? i think its around 200 grams. i suppose i'm just looking for the best bang for my buck. thanks! |

| i'm a huge fan of saddle mount carriers...currently using x-lab sonic wing and super wing. i like the option of having several bottles on board in addition to the cage on my downtube. there've been times when those extra bottles were lifesavers. |

| that is the same bike i rode for two years.
if i remember correctly that bike tested slower with the behind the seat bottles than frame mounted (both high and low back bottles were slower by a decent amount than one frame bottle on either the down or seat tube, and just a bit slower than two frame bottles. |

Silver member | Actually a seat tube or downtube water bottle (even if empty) is better aerodymanics for your bike because it helps break up the turbulant air that if coming from your wheel and front forks.
I am sure someone here can site the article but from everything I have read and my last bike tech guy (who used to race pro), this is what I have been told.
And what was said above, yes bottle holders behind the seat really do not test well...
But here is the thing to remember.... is it worth it to save maybe 10 minutes on the bike in a IM and have no water and comprimise your race???? yea no.
Having water (or any liquid) for AGers is more important to the success of your race than saving a few minutes buy having your bike a little less aero.... |

| What about a front-mount aero bottle? They tested very well in the wind tunnel. I have the 2 chamber Aquacell which holds 40oz. Yes, it's kind of heavy when full, but I don't have to stop and refill. Plus, you don't have to change positions to drink.

| Training I use the cages. Racing I have an aero bottle (and I take the cages off). |

love this as well. I have the 2 chamber.....2 chamber is nice as you can carry water and sports drink, or leave one chamber empty if you are doing a sprint race and you are concerend about weight...personally, weight means little in cycling....its all about aero and this allows you to stay aero.
EDIT...sorry about 3 posts...not sure how the heck that happened!?!?!?

Here is the "Speedfil Hydration System" already installed in my bike...

" i've been thinking that mounting cages behind the seat would be the best way to go? "
People tend to loose a lot of bottles with these. I have seen lots of bottles launched out of them. I decided to keep the cage on my down tube and aero drink between the aero bars. |
