So i got my new Tri bike last week and sometime next week i'm gonna look to add some race wheels to it.   However, i'm totally ignorant about buying new wheels.

What i'm wondering is what else do i need when buying wheels?   Do i need to buy a cassette for the back or do they come with it?   Do they come with the skewers?    Can someone give me an idea of what i'll actually need when buying new wheels?

My new wheels came with wheels and skewers.  Depending on the wheel you get you could need:
Clinchers: Rim tape, tube, tire, cassette
Tubulars: Tire, brake pads if the braking surface is carbon, cassette
That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Tires, tubes, rim tape (if not already on), carbon fiber brake pads (if carbon fiber). You can use your existing cassette rather than buying a new one.

Are you currently using a Campagnolo or Shimano / Sram cassette? Make sure your wheels use the same brand that you currently use, although Shimano and Sram are interchangeable.

Not all ways. There are Shimano ONLY 10sp hubs out there. They have taller spines on them and the SRAM cassettes will not fit. Make sure the hub is Shimano/SRAM and not just Shimano. Most aftermarket companies are both.

you should be fine, they'll most likely come with skewers and thats about it. your LBS will know to take care of the rim tape. unless you want to deal with changing your cassette from wheel to wheel, just get another cassette. you may have to get some valve extenders if your going to run something really deep, but again, thats not a problem at all. i have the new 2009 HED Jet 90's on the C2 rim and they are sweet. the HED wheels are much more affordable than zipps, so if you're being "thrifty" (if thats possible with race wheels) then they are a very good option.
