Comments: Lined up in the second row behind the local pros and Gear West young studs. Managed to keep up fairly close to them for the first quarter and then eased into a decent pace. Since Todd Firebaugh wasn't racing today (he kicks my azz on the bike), I figured my main AG competition would be my teamate Tom. On the last couple of turns I looked back to see where he was and he was about 10 seconds behind me. Pretty un-eventful first run leg. What would you do differently?: Nothin'. They changed the course slightly from last year but my run split was only one second different from last year.  Transition 1
Comments: This transition took forever. I couldn't get my stupid helmet strap to clip on. All I could think of was Macca at Kona the year he had a ton of trouble getting his helmet clipped on. Tom's bike was racked next to mine and he arrived as I was having the strap troubles and I hurried even more. Finally got it clipped on and we both wished each other good luck. What would you do differently?: Not f#ck around with my helmet strap.  Bike
Comments: Hammered. Pace translates to 23.3 mph What would you do differently?: Nothin'. Bike split was 1:33 faster than last year - same course. I only looked back once to see if Tom had gained on me and I couldn't see him so was feeling pretty confident that I had the AG win in the bag. Transition 2
Comments: When I set up transition I decided not to put a towel down. When I got to T2 I regretted that decision because I was stepping on a bunch of small pebbles as I tried to get my racing flats on. Had to wipe each foot on the other to clean the socks before putting the flats on. What would you do differently?: put a towel down or brush pebbles away Run
Comments: Felt a little flat on the second run leg. I have done zero speedwork this spring and it showed. I knew I had the AG win in the bag and I think that contributed to me losing my focus a little in the middle of the second run. Pretty uneventful second run leg. What would you do differently?: Stay more focused Post race
Warm down: Did about a 2 mile warmdown What limited your ability to perform faster: Early in the season and no run speedwork this spring Event comments: Gear West Du is a very popular race on the local calendar. Shop owner Kevin O'Connor really puts in a lot of effort to make this a great race. The gear raffles at the end are awesome but we walked away empty-handed. I was looking around to say hi, but didn't see you until the very end while we were waiting at the raffle through the crowd and not again. I struggled a bit with the pebbly feet too and though for a second about running with dirty feet, but then decided what the heck did it matter to me (being practically last and all)... I'm glad you beat your friend, that always helps |

Seems like every year this duathlon is plagued by cold, windy weather. The forecast overnight called for temps in the low 30s. The wind was howling on Saturday but the forecast called for winds to die down overnight. I packed a ton of warm weather race gear to be ready for all race contingencies.
Met Tom and Mike (both Kona vets) in Scandia at 5:30 to carpool to Orono, MN for the race. We got there in plenty of time to get decent transition spots.
After setting up our transition spots we got on the bikes for about 15 min to check out mechanicals. Everyone was talking about the temperatures and how much or how little clothes to wear during the race. The sun was out and it seemed like it was gonna warm up to a comfortable level. I brought leg warmers but decided not to use them. I had a Craft long sleeve layer underneath my Wild River Tri top and decided that's all I'd need. Left the gloves out next to my bike shoes in case I decided to use them at the last second. Put the racing flats on and warmed up for about 15 min before the start.
