I wash cycling and running clothes every time. Swimming I wash almost every time I do a load of laundry which is every day or two (so I may wear the same swimsuit without washing maybe twice). While I see that most people wash after every workout I'm surprised at the number who don't. Sure, I have my favorite pair of cycling bibs but I do have others.

FWIW, I always wash stuff right after. For some reason, tech shirts stink bad after I take them off and would be noticably offensive in the house.

But this begs to ask, if you feel your clothes are ok to wear repeatedly why waste the water for a shower? Just add another layer of deodorant and you are fresh and ready to party! Think how good that is for mother earth??? (I am kidding by the way)

If you hop in the shower in yoru clothes, they are fine. Better for them...and saves on laundry time. Honestly, I have some sport bras that are circa 1992 and still around and doing fine.

Every time... except my pool swimsuit, I wear that into the shower and give it a good rinse for the chlorine; it gets a proper washing every 10 days or so.

I change all my running and biking clothes everytime...but...I pile all the work-out clothes with my Buddy clothes in a basket...and...wash them every 2 days...

Also I rinse very well my swimsuit after every swim at the pool...our pool doesn't use chlorine...salty system... and...if we do an OWS at the ocean...I wash/rise by hand with a soft soap...

I apply the same philosophy to ALL my clothes, not just workout - wear them until they need to be washed. I can get several wears out of everything.

Running shorts with the liner go into the shower or the pool with me and they're good to go again.

mmrocker13 - 2009-05-22 11:13 AM You wash your swimsuit???

I soak them with a little bit of mild liquid dish soap every other time or so. This is how my mom washed my sister's swimsuits for years (she was a competitive swimmer). Just habit, I guess.

I agree with the comment about having a washer/dryer in-unit. It's definitely a luxury. I have that set-up now, but with 3 of us using it (I rent a townhouse with 2 other girls), the water and electric bills get pricey. Which is why I often hand-wash stuff in the sink. I won't lie and say that in college, I used to do laundry maybe once every two weeks - luckily, I had enough stuff to last me that long. We had 2 washers and 2 dryers for an entire (small) building, so if they were in use, you had to wait forever or haul all your stuff to the laundromat - which in Boston, in the winter, SUCKS. We'd wash leotards in the sink and hang them to dry, since they got sweaty and we only had so many. That's also why I'm in the habit of NOT wearing underwear under things - you don't wear underwear under leotards. So I don't find it odd.

That's why I shower with my clothes (swim suit, too). Little bit of johnson's baby shampoo, and we're all good to go--clothing and me. :-)

I've NEVER reworn workout gear without washing.  I sweat buckets and am basically biohazardous after any workout.  Swim suit, I'll run through the was once every other week.  Otherwise, it's getting cleaned before I'm putting it back on!

I have a sliding scale on workout clothes.  I commute to work and I wear workout clothes - but it's only 5k each way - so I don't wear cycling shorts for those rides.  Many times I'll wear the same tights/shorts/tees more than one time since they are on for a total of about 10-12 minutes twice a day.  (Undergarments get washed every time.)  Longer workouts or sweaty workouts get a wash after every use.

Bike shorts & Sports bras - every time.
Swimsuit - gets chlorinated.  Rarely washed.
Outerwear - as needed.

I tried it without underwear once, but it just felt...weird.

I've never had a problem wearing my underwear. So I guess I must have a hoo-ha of steel. Or maybe I have built up calluses to the point that it doesn't bother me. Super sexy calluses. Or not...

When my son was six or so, he went through a phase where he felt underwear was an unnecessary article of clothing and so he stopped wearing it. This went on for a few weeks until his mother, chief laundry doer in the household, noticed a distinct lack of superhero underwear in the laundry. A brief maternal investigation revealed his commando ways, and she took swift corrective action. He now wears underwear again.

The boy had callouses where one should not have callouses.

I have to go to a laundromat and there is still no way I'd wear anything twice. I have enough to get through a week of training and if I have a lot of double days I'll just hand wash a sports bra or something to get me through the week. I personally think it's disgusting to re-wear any athletic clothing. We've all been on the treadmill or in the start corral next to someone who reeks before their workout has even started. It's because their foul clothes have a permanent stench from doubling up. If you have a limited supply of clothing items or limited access to laundry facilities, simply take it off, throw it in the sink while you shower and hang it up when you get out. This stuff dries super fast so there is really no excuse to not wash it. Nasty.

Shirts, underwear etc. wash after every use. Shorts pants and tights I use for 1 workout then use them for house clothes/sleepwear the rest of the week. I wear dress clothes at work so when i get home I like to wear the other stuff while I kick around the house. Since I live by myself noone seems to care. I do wash about once or twice a week depending. Under armour and tech fabric I wash in the sink or bathtub if they get too piled up before hand.

So, is living by yourself a lifestyle choice? Because, again, perhaps there is a connection between re-wearing stinky clothes and letting pile up, and being single.  Just saying...

I was shocked to hear this too.  It soaks in chorine for an hour which will kill just about anything, then it gets rinsed out with fresh water.  It almost certainly picks up more bacteria in the washing machine then it had after you got out of the pool.

I sweat less on a ten mile run then a lot of people I know while they are eating doritos on their couch.  I generally only wash clothes if they are damp after the workout or they fail the sniff test.  In the summer this might be after every workout, in the winter it might be 2,3,4... days.  Fortunately I live in Chicago so this whole "summer" thing doesn't happen often.

In the winter I can wear some things more than once, especially an outer layer.  Now that the summer humidity is here, I can't wear anything twice.  This morning I put on all freshly clean running clothes and I smelled something funky.  It took me a few minutes to realize it was my hat, which I had only worn once since the last wash but can usually wear several times before washing.  Now I am officially in the season of "sweaty mess".
