Don't get too excited guys.... I haven't seen any women doing this.

All kidding aside, is it legal to go shirtless (guys) during a tri?  I looked through the USAT rules and didn't see anything one way or another, but it seems I have seen this topic before and it was illegal at some races.

Yes, it is against USAT rules.

I have seen tons of people go shirtless, mainly sprints. Oddly enough they are always VERY competitive and FOP.

A person who is very competitive top 1-2 in medium local races and top 10 at 600+ events doesn't wear a shirt if the tri is not USAT sanctioned.  other than that he does.

last I heard, it wasn't againt USAT rules to race shirtless.  I know its been considered to add a rule against racing shirtless, but to my knowledge, never implemented.

a race a few years back the RD was actually corrected at the start of the race by a USAT rep when he was going over info/rules and stated that shirts were required.  This was 2 years ago, so something could have changed.

It also depends on the location of the race.. Nations Tri when it was using federal land required that a shirt be worn, they said it was a federal regulation for the permit

but i thought tan lines were a status symbol among our kind?

so if it's againts WTC rules, does that make it technically illegal to go shirtless at a race?

Only if it's a WTC race (ie an IM branded race).  Or ITU.  You have to have your sternum covered (equal opportunity) if you are racing ITU (Team USA)

Individual races run under USAT rules can also ban bare torsos if they so choose.

I used to run in Houston.  I could never run with a Tshirt on.  It would be so soaked with sweat it would weigh a ton.  When I moved to Amarillo it was a little dryer and it didn't matter as much.  It seems that very few people here run without shirts.  It's good for me because with my red hair my skin is so white that you'd probably need sunglasses on to run near me the glare would be so great.  We did a fun run in a local stadium.  I asked one of the runners if it would be a big deal if I ran without a shirt.  He said, "go ahead, no one will notice"  Here's a picture from the front page of the next day's Sport page.  Care to guess which one I am?
