Subject: 1/2 Ironman Clothing question
I'm racing in my first 1/2 Ironman this summer and I want to get some advice on how to determine what I wear. The 56 mile bike is longer than I'd want to brave with just my tri-shorts, so I'm trying to determine what to wear under my bike shorts for the ride. I've read that most 1/2 Ironman's don’t provide changing tents, so I guess I'll be forced to wear something underneath them, since I don't want to soak them under my wetsuit during the swim. Could any of the other Half Ironman-ers provide some advice on what has worked in the past? I've heard of some people wearing their tri-shorts under their wetsuit and slipping the bike shorts on over them, for the bike and taking the bike shorts off for the run, but I'm not sure what kind of chaffing this would cause. Thanks,

Derek

I've got my first 1/2 IM in Sept and I'll probably wear a pair of jammers under my wetsuit and have my bike shorts waiting at T1....yank them on and go.  At T2, yank them off and go.  A regular Speedo banana hammock would do the job also if you prefer to pull on a set of loos fitting split-leg running shorts for the run.  Whatever you decide, make sure you give it a test run to find out if it gives you any irritations.

Yes, I think having the bike shorts in transition to yank on is a good idea. Lube up your thighs, legs if worried about chaffing..... but the ride would be worth having a better cushion. I'm doing a Half in a few weeks, and I'll pull on the bike shorts. I may wear two piece swimsuit, pull bike shorts on for bike, off for run (maybe running shorts), and pull different top on for bike (and take swimsuit top off underneath bike top). You guys have everything easy........ always more complicated for us chics.........

I just wear a pair of tri shorts under my wetsuit along with my race top and pull on a pair of bike shorts in T1. The extra padding is ideal for the long ride. Then in T2, I just pull off the bike shorts and I am out!

Don't worry about a little slip up while changing -- nothing like giving the people a little of what they want!

This has nothing to do with this thread, but I am wondering just how many of those little female swim/bike/run .gif's you have???

...and where is she getting them from?

For my half last year I wore jammers and simply pulled on bike shorts over them after the swim. I meant to take them off after the bike, but completely forgot and didn't realize it until I was finished with the race. The jammers will keep you from chafing, or at least they did me.

Don't make it so hard on yourself...just yank that swim top off...we won't mind.  But please make sure to let us know where your bike is racked so we can keep an eye on it...the "rack" that is

Karla, true in many ways, but lets not get carried away. Don't forget about "the boys" dangling periously close to a sharpish looking seat point for many hours. The psychological impact alone can unmake a weaker man.....

I wore tri shorts for a 1/2 IM, put on bike shorts over the tri shorts at T1, and was supposed to take the bike shorts off at T2, but forgot......took them off at mile 2 and carried them the rest of the way!

No issues with wearing tri shorts and bike shorts....I was frankly happy for the extra padding.

I've heard good things about this:

Anyone else tried it? I'm thinking of getting one for my 1/2.

I have the seat cover, but it only fits narrow saddles, so I can't use it!.....DeSoto makes one also for saddles without the narrow profile - I'm looking at checking into that

Maybe I'm just an alien or something, but I wore my tri shorts the whole time for my 1/2 IM. I did a few long training rides in my tri shorts to make sure they would work and they were fine. I wore a tri top as well. I considered a sports bra under the tri top, but after a few training runs, decided I could do a 1/2 with just the tri top. Give the tri shorts a try on a training ride and see how it goes.

I also just go with the tri shorts for a 1/2. That's kind of the point, to speed through transition. For a full IM, though, I did change shorts. In either case its a good idea to be very generous with the chamois butter, but that's a whole different thread.

I wouldn't consider ~10sec at each transition to be a big deal during a 4+ hour race...especially if it makes you that much more comfortable on the ride.

I don't consider it to be time lost -- I get off the bike with a not so sore butt.

I only ride my training rides (20 - 100 miles) with tri shorts on. Putting bike shorts on for the 1/2 distance makes it feel like I am on a huge comfort seat and not my skinny racing one.

I use my tri-shorts from beginning to end...no changing needed. Find yourself a high quality pair and use lots of saddle lube...

Sorry, this is only my 2nd tri season, but what is chamois butter. Do you put this on the pad in your tri shorts? What does it do?

Also, I've never used saddle lube. Is it pretty standard to use on long rides?

Yes! Do expand! What is Peanut Chamois Butter? Sounds rather gross, quite frankly, BUTT if it will help during my Half IM ride, I'm all for slathering it on...  is this different from Body Glide or other "lubes" ?????

My butt thanks you in advance.

It really is a personal choice.  I've never had any trouble (to my surprise) with only a fleece pad in my desoto shorts on my 1/2 IM races even after I trained many many miles in bike shorts with ample padding.

I think after a while, if put in enough saddle time, you'll get used to the bike.  Mr. Lance Armstrong himself even said his butt gets sore during the beginning of each training season!

I've gone on 40+ mile rides without any "butter" and I've been fine... Sounds slippery, and sloppy to me... (!!!!)

I wore bike shorts last year for a 1/2 IM and seriously regretted it!  They stayed wet too long.  Think...chamois shaped chafing...OUCH!

For my half this may, I will use a tri-suit and after the swim I will put on my cycling shorts on top of my tri-suit.
