Subject: Who is doing a first Marathon this Fall-What program are you using
I am doing my first in October.  I was all set to use the high intensity, 3 day a week, F.I.R.S.T. program. I used it for a 25k in May and I liked it, but only doing a 20 miler in training makes me nervous for hitting the "wall" during the race.   A friend used Galloway (Run/Walk) for his first and highly recommended it.  Now I am stuck in paralysis by analysis.  My running store owner today suggested something in between (Hal Higdon, McMillan).

What is everyone else doing?

What do the vets recommend?

My first marathon is the Marine Corps Marathon in October. I am using Galloway's book. My plan has me running only 3 days per week, but the weekend long runs increase to 26 miles.

Hartford, CT in October.  Using Higindon Novice 3 as it best fits with tri training since 2 cross training days are built in per week and I can add a swim/bike on the shorter run days.

X2 on the MCM being my first this fall.  I'm using Hal Higdon's Novice 2, but I feel like it's really not enough running so I may modify it to add another day here and there.  As far as the long run, Higdon says for your first marathon there's really no gain from training in the 20-26 mile range (subjective, of course), all it does is slow your recovery with no real fitness gains.  He had some evidence in his book that I'm reading now.

Well I will know if will be doing NYC tomorrow at noon (which will be my first)!

I plan on doing one of the Higdon plans but I am not quite sure on which one yet (either Novice 2 or Immed 1).  The immed 1 plan in 5x/week running compared to 4X for Novice 2.  I get a little achy without non-running days so I am not sure how the 5x week would work.

There is also a new novice 3 plans geared toward a triathlete in training.  3X week with bike and Xtrain.  http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/novice3intro.htm

I think I'm either going to use Higdon's Novice 2 or Intermediate 1 - or maybe a combination of the two.

I can't decide on my first being Baltimore (Oct. 11th) or Rehobeth (Nov. 21). Or maybe both?? I have some analysis to do myself!

I did the Baltimore half last year, and just be ready for some hills.  The half is the 2nd part of the marathon route, and 15-20 is basically all up hill.  It was unusually warm that day (high 70's when my wave left, in the 80's when I finished), so just make sure you're prepared for all that and you'll be good.  Rehobeth is pretty flat, isn't it?

Ha ha, yes. I did the half last year too...which is why I can't decide whether I want all those hills for my first!! Rehobeth is super flat, but it's out and back - blech.

Baltimore.
I'm going to be using the Runnersworld veteran 10 week program.
I'm going to alter it a bit though because I'm doing a charity century the month before where I get to act as domestique for a bunch of alumni types. So a bit more biking in the first 6 weeks of the program.
