I am going to Emerald Isle for a week with the inlaws and looking for training advice in and around Emerald Isle. Any good places to run/cycle? Group rides? Gyms? THANK YOU!

Nice! I have a house down there oceanside by scotchbonnet drive. Where about are you stayin?

Running:
Ocean Drive is a good "road" run, as it follows the shore behind the first row of houses. You can run from/ to Bogue inlet (depending where you're staying)

Cycling:
I wouldnt recommend 700x23 tires on ocean drive if you're goin to ride, some of the roads are rough surfaced. Maybe take a mountain bike.

On 58, there are lots of cyclists. Its the only thru road on the isle- so you can ride to atlantic beach and back.

Swimming:
OWS fun!

Good luck and have fun!

Thank you so much! How is the traffic on 58? I'll be alone so just need to be cautious. We are staying down at the west end in a neighborhood off Coast Guard road. My inlaws have a house there. I just looked at a map and it looks like its 20 miles to the end of Emerald Isle at Macon State Park. Have you gone to the end and back?

45mph max speed with cops EVERYWHERE! I warn you now, don't speed. People are used to bikes and walkers on 58, tho it can get a little congested in season.

In a car. lol- i swear it takes like 40 minutes to get to Fort Macon in a car from EI. i've only ran the oceanfront, never cycled the area yet- altho i'll be down there july 4th with my tri comin up on the 12th, i might bring the bikes.

I live in Morehead City and ride 58 routinely. Its a good road and I typically ride alone. Every now and then you encounter gravel in the bike shoulder. Cars pay attention pretty good. Early in the morning is the best. Sat and Sun, you will encounter a large number of riders and runners on 58. I ride from the Fort Macon to the emerald isle coast guard station alot and its a nice ride.

Have fun and enjoy our coast.

Its roughly a 45 mile ride from Coast Guard Road to the Fort Macon area. Road is good through Emerald Isle with a little gravel on the side in Indian Beach and Salter Path. None of it bad. Traffic in the morning and early afternoon isn't an issue. Prevailing wind is at your back on the way out and and in your face on the way home. You will feel like Lance Armstrong on the way out and like your riding a "big wheel" on the way back!! Its a good ride, enjoy.

Nothing like a good headwind to make you feel slow and under-trained. :-)

Thanks for all the good advice. I'll give 58 a try early mornings.
