...that's the "highlight" of the bike course at my race this weekend. Apparently, the descent is equally fun, and both include multiple switchbacks.

Do you think this is too technical a course to consider using a tri bike? Should I use my road bike instead? (It's an Oly Distance, by the way.)

I would use the tri bike unless the other 20+ miles are also a 9% avg. grade.

Id say keep the tri bike unless your tri bike gear ratio is suited for a flat course.  or you have a compact crank.

Oh, yeah. I do have a compact crank setup on my tri bike. That's an important point.

i think you'll be fine - it will be a short, but steep climb. .  perhaps it is just because i don't have a road bike, so i only know about climbing on a TT bike

That's pretty much exactly like the climb up to my house at the end of every ride I do. Unless there are lots of climbs like that, you'll be fine on a tri bike. Everybody's different but for me on a 40k, I'd probably use my road bike if the ride had ~2500' of total climbing.

One of the climbs in IMCali was 1.2 miles at 14% grade and just about everyone used a tri bike.
