Subject: How do I build a transition rack?
I've been looking to build a transition rack but have been unable to find plans on the internet. It shouldn't be too hard, but I would like it to be sturdy. I definitely need the hanging rack where you can hang the bike by the seat (not the new wheel one).

Also PVC or metal pipes?

Thanks for the help

Metal, not PVC.  PVC will deteriorate in sun and release chemicals (or so I have been told when researching the pro's and cons of building  PVC kayak racks last year.

Simple would be to make an "A" as your bracket, every 6' to 8' metal bar, put in another bracket.

The way they did it below, is drill two holes, offset, in the ends cross bar, creating a 60 deg angle.  Or, in clock terms, drill holes at 1 and 7.  and 11 and 5.  there is a nut, or stopper in the metal legs so it doesnt go all the way through.  This way, they can easily take it down when done.

Edited to remove at least one big red square:

Thanks for the help Ratherbesnowboarding but not exactly sure what the red square is supposed to be...

You have to use the insert image button on your message, not just copy and paste if that is what you did

The racks used at local races are simple and sturdy. Consist of a "T" made with 2x4s, the horizontal one goes along the grouns, the vertical one is attached in the middle of the horizontal one at a 90° angle. Each rack has two of these "Ts" used as legs, with a hole drilled in the top to accomodate a (1"to 1-1/2"?) galvanized metal pipe. The hole is somewhat bigger in diameter than the pipe so that the legs can be spread out to put a bind on the pipe and hold everythiing securely.

I'll try to find a picture.

That's how all or ours are built. The small poles slide into the big one for storage.

Just curious - why?  If it's just for you to practice we might have a different answer than if you're going to start a race or something.
