I was not either...my first "tri" was last june but the swim was cancelled cause of lightning, so it was my first ever real tri and I got through the swim without too much problem.

They have boats, lifeguards every few feet.

4-5 different waves as well.

Woohoo! I'm doing it!  It'll be my second year for this one, and my third tri overall.  I'm getting pretty stoked.  As for the swim, I didn't see where you were from, so I'm not sure if you're familiar with Lake Decatur or not. Last year it was a nice temp, and they do a wondeful job of having visible bouys/ people on rafts to let you rest on.  Personally, swimming is my best leg, so I can't say it caused me any issues.  It is VERY murky though. Definately take a practice swim before race day if you can, or at least the morning of, because it's a little wierd the first time swimming in it as opposed to a pool.  But you totally should do this race! It's really well organized and I can't say enough good things about it.

I'll be doing this one also. Did it last year and it was nicely runl. Lake Decatur isn't the cleanest, but it is what it is.

Update:  It is currently 75 degrees.  Two and a quarter inches of rain and 60 degree weather isn't nice on lake temperatures apparently...

I will be there and ready....younger looking kid with a beard and probably wearing my SockGuy hat before the race.  See me...say hello.

This was my first tri and was a great race.  I never did an open water swim before but am well trained for swimming so felt I could do the distance if I didn't freak.  Luckily I didn't freak.  Swim course was very well patrolled.    It was very well organized and where else can you gorge on funnel cakes and kettle upon crossing the finish line.  I'm definitely gonna make this a 'must do' every year!

Was it just me or were there not many buoys marking the return side (north heading) of the swim? I remember maybe 1 or 2... and I zig zagged the entire length. Meh... oh well.
