Subject: Motivational Quotes

I like a lot of people's signatures...

whats the best motivational quote you have heard/ read.

                                           -OR-

What do you say to yourself when you are close to bonking, to give yourself a kick in the pants.

I ll use them as an athlete and a coach...

... do or do not, there is no try
... how many people areyou going to LET beat you
...Can Do (thats ole reliable right there)
... you never regret comming FROM the gym/ pool/ bike

here is one I used this morning... I said to myself, "self, You're not even alseep (4:30 am) just get up and do something" - I swam my personal best at the pool this morning.

I saw this one on someone's signature here on BT and I use it myself a lot as well as saying it to my kids when they are complaining about having to go to soccer/volleyball/baseball/track practice:

"There are two times to train, when you want to and when you don't"

Or something very close to that...

a quote i picked up at the gym from one of the trainers, that i tell myself daily is, "you can do anything for 30 more seconds!"  it's usually 5min or 2min, but it has a way of making me realize that the pain is temporary and that 5 more min of swimming or whatever is nothing.

also tell myself a lot....."don't think about it, just do it.  all the time spent thinking can be spent pushing"

my personal favorite:

When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it - but all that had gone before. -- Jacob Rus

ooo the inches speech from Any Given Sunday is great!

My better is better than your better.

Pain is weakness leaving the body.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate; our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous. Actually who are you not to be?

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low, and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,

And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow,
You might succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far.

So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,
It's when things seem worse, that you must not quit.

“The future has several names. For the weak, it is the impossible. For the fainthearted, it is the unknown. For the thoughtful and valiant, it is the ideal.”
- Victor Hugo

or...

“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”-Muhammad Ali

or...

"Excellence is caring more than others think wise; risking more than others think safe. Dreaming more than others think is practical and expecting more than others think is possible."

I've actually got a whole list.

From my race reports:

The more I push my limitations, the more I realize I don't have as many of them as I thought.

If someone beats me because they are better, I can accept it.  However, being beaten by someone because I am being lazy is not acceptable.

I read this quote in Bear Gryll's book titled "The kid that Climbed Everest" and it's now my signature.

"Commitment is doing the things you said you'd do, long after the mood you said it in has left you."

This really rings true when training for IM. You sign up a year in advance when everything is going great. Fast forward 11 months to today when I woke up at 4:55 drove to the lake in a downpour, air temp 57, water temp 60 and completed my swim workout. At lunch went outside in the same downpour and ran 7.5 miles. Not as fun as the day I signed up!
