It means "Harden The F*** Up"

Often used as a response when someone is perceived to be looking to the group for an excuse not to train, looking for group validation for their pre-existing excuse for not training or simply to respond to general training-based whining.

example query: I *really* hate getting up early but want to train in the AM.  Does anyone have any advice??

response: HTFU and get yer out of bed..

BTW, x2 as an inspirational quote.

when i want to take a break, i ponder the gentle words spoken by one of the best motivational speakers i've ever heard.
"you're going to end up eating a steady diet of government cheese, and living in a van down by the river!"   -  matt foley

In a similar vein:

"Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son."

And then one from a country song.  "If you're going through hell, keep on going" - So simple that I love it.  If you are going through a tough time.  Just keep on going and get past it.

that was winston churchill...not some copy-cat country band

I've been collecting quotations for a while. I spotted this one a few months ago on BT or ST. I love this one - Thanks, to whoever found it and added it to their profile!

"People think it's an obsession. A compulsion. As if there were an irresistible impulse to act. It's never been like that. I chose this life. I know what I'm doing. And on any given day, I could stop doing it. Today, however, isn't that day. And tomorrow won't be either."

Chaderbox - 2009-06-20 10:51 PM Reading through this, I've noticed a lot of Eminem quotes.  No point here, just found it interesting and he's not someone that immediately pops in mind when you think of a motivator.

The man has a way with words.

In some ways he is a lot like Robert Frost.  Frost was criticized in his day heavily for writing simple poems that looked to the eye simple to reproduce in style. So much for someone reproducing that style - Frost is still a unique talent.

ohh this is my thing!!  I'm always underlining things that appeal to me - two favs right now:

One is a song my daughter sings *constantly* by Hannah Montana believe it or not:
"'Cause there's always gonna be another mountain,
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
   It's the climb, yeah!"

LOL - I'm glad to see there is another adult who actually likes that Hannah song! I've been contemplating putting it on my iPod, but geez, really? Hannah on MY iPod????

I have a file somewhere with a bunch of these kinds of things, and my basement refrigerator is covered with inspirational cards and magazine clippings (my bike trainer is set up in a spot where the fridge is directly in front of me - helps for those LONG winter trainer sessions!). Some of my favorites:

Push yourself to the limits and experience wonders you never imagined.
- Unknown

When you are going through hell, keep going.
- Winston Churchill

"There is no use trying," said Alice; "one can't believe impossible things." "I dare say you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."
- Lewis Carroll

You must do the thing you think you cannot do.
- Eleanor Roosevelt

Leap and the net will appear
- Zen saying

I have a friend that developed MS years ago. He used to run and coach cross country and track. evetually he was confined to an electric wheel chair, unable to do anything for himself. Yet he maintained the most positive atitude of just about anyone I ever met. He was constantly finding ways to work around his disability. When he could not run he became a race official, when he could no longer hold a starters pistol we jury rigged a arm to hold the pistol for him..etc.....
Wjen that last mile looks like a hundred, or that hill looks just a bit to steep, My mantra has become "Think of Ed, Think of Ed ......."
I am certain that all of us have an "Ed" that we know...

There's a giant mural over the pool at the gym and across it is written:

"To accomplish anything, you must first expect it of yourself"

That has gotten me through some tough sets when I felt like giving up or going easy.

I'm going to paraphrase because I can't find the original quote, but it's from Mark Weir, Bada$$ Mountain biker extraordinaire.

"I'd rather out my spleen then push my bike." Comes in handy when you think you can't make the climb you are on.

Here are a few quotes I took from Navy SEAL training. No I'm not a SEAL but damn I would've loved to give it a try.

"Mind over matter....if you don't mind, it won't matter."

"The only easy day was yesterday."

"Misery loves company."
