Had a scary moment this evening.

I was cycling down one of the straight roads into my neighborhood and a car on the same road going the opposite directions attempts to turn right in front of me.  I see this last second and slam on my brakes (15 mph) The bike flips over I go over the handle bars and slam my head onto the street, but semi brace my fall with my hands.  5-6 people witness the whole thing, and think the worst as they say "you slammed your head hard."

The a$$hole who cut me off drove away.

A bit of a headache, some nice road scars, no broken bones, so I was lucky. I can't imagine if I didnt have that helmet on what would have happened.

Yikes!  Glad you are OK!  I had a run in with a truck a long time ago and my helmet saved me from a serious injury.  Go buy another helmet in the morning and get back on the saddle!

Wow, that is insane. I am glad to hear that you are ok. It sucks having to deal with people that dont pay attention to what is around them. I guess all you can do from here on out is to make sure you dont put too much pressure on the front brake. I have learned to only squeeze my back hard and soft on the front. I dont feel like flipping around when I am not on a trampoline.

The helmet is still in great shape.  Just very happy I had it on.

You may want to check into this, but I'm nearly positive if your helmet took a good hit you need a new one.  You don't want it to fail if there is a next time.  Unless you are already planning to replace it, then carry on Smile

x2 on replacing it. It may LOOK fine, but the structure could be severely weakened and next time it may not hold up so well if you fell on it pretty hard.

x3 on replacing it. Everything I have read says if it took a hard hit to replace it. Glad that you were OK though. But if the headache gets alot worse I would see a doctor.

Helmet MUST be replaced.

I have been involved of racing from one kind to another since I was 9. Any time a helmet takes a hard it of any kind the structural integrity of it is compromised. It may appear fine, but insides are not what they are meant to be.

I know it sucks to go spend another 75 bucks on one, but it did what it was supposed to do. Which is money well spent.

Talk to your LBS as some helmet manufacturers have a crash replacement program where you can get one for less money than retail but I agree, it has to be replaced.

I'm glad you are ok!!

You definitely need to replace your helmet if you hit your head.  Any time it's in a crash, you need to get a new one.  Some companies will give you a discount on the new one if it was in a crash.

The impact undoubtedly crushed some of the material in the helmet, lessening it's protective ability. Bicycle helmets are one-use-only for impact resistance. They look fine, but they're not.

Sounds like it did it's job and extremely well. But it's time to retire it.

Gotta give you credit for coming out of that crash as well as you did. My money is that the car has either a Sooner or A&M emblem on the back. Hook'em. Heed the advice of those saying get a new helmet. Who is your LBS in Houston?

If the helmet shows signs of the crash, consider cutting off the straps and giving it to someone who works with kids or sells bikes, to show people WHY they need to wear helmets.  I keep a helmet in my office from a crash I had several years ago with a big crack in the styrofoam, that I use whenever a kid tells me he/she rides a bike or skateboard without a helmet.

I'm sorry you crashed but very happy you had a helmet and was wearing it properly.

You absolutely need to replace it.

I keep my cracked helmet hanging from the beam in my kitchen reminding how it saved me. I went about 23-24 head first into a metal street sign pole. I take it down and show my friends kids when they visit.

Thanks for the "heads" up. I've had a few family and friends who cycle tell me the same thing.  The helmet did it's job and spending another $60 in the grand scheme of things is nothing compared to make sure the cocnut is safe and protected.

Some people in the neighborhood actually witnessed the whole thing and there was another lady who was right behind the truck that cut me off.  At this point we just have a description of the vehicle, and assume they live in my neighborhood.

One of the guys that witnessed it is an avid motorcycle guys and he was actually more pissed off at me stating he deals with the same thing on his morotorcycle.

The thing that pisses me off themost is not that he made a mistake, cause people make a mistake, but that he never stopped even after he watched me crash.  Didn't even check to see if it was serious, so that lone leads me to believe he thought it was very serious.
