I wish so badly that I could get up early and workout. On the few times in my life that I have been able to I enjoyed it immensely. The mornings are so quiet and beautiful.

But, I have trouble falling asleep and I get most of my much needed rest in the morning hours. My sleep tends to be cyclical so even when I have spells where I do sleep well I use it to catch up on my overdue rest.

Maybe someday I'll be able to get to the point where I can get up but I have wished for it for years and it just has never happened.

OK, I'll take this thread as a wakeup call and will ride for one hour tomorrow before I go to work. At six o'clock tomorrow I will hate you Gary!!

I just noticed this today.  I get up at 5:30am everyday and get to work at 7:30am.  I work until 4pm usually and then have a 2 hour break before school in which I go from 6-8pm (though this quarter I have Tuesday and Thursday off to train!!!).

I notice this a lot since I work on the side of the road.  What the hell do 25-35year old young couples do that allow them to run at 10am on a weekday?  Do they not have jobs?  I mean I saw a couple the other day in their early 30s who live in a $300k townhomes and they both were running.  WTH???  It's Tuesday at 10am and you're not worried about a job?

I'd kill to have train time like that but if they can do it then more power to them.

I'm not a morning person and my body fights me if I try to be one.

do not press that snooze button, if you do, you're stuffed.
switch off the alarm, get your feet on the floor immediately and don't even think about what you're doing
have everything packed and ready, before you can think about wanting to be back in bed, you'll be out the door.
As loads of others have said, meeting up with a group is a major incentive, if you lie-in you'll just look like a massive wuss.
I don't go to bed particularly early the night before hand but will probably hit the hay an hour or so early the night after (or have a nana nap).

I am not a morning person but now live in a very morning-oriented city; if a tradie says he'll be with you first thing in the morning, he means 7am.  It can be 30C by 8am in the summer so it's early morning running/biking or it's just too horrible to comtemplate.  I will never ever ever EVER like getting out of bed at that time but 10 minutes into my workout, I've a grin on my face and loving it.

first of all i was not a morning person at all. but i have started down this road and i actually enjoy the mornings now-it is peaceful, no traffic, and i love it. i am married and have two kids that play sports\practice\band\life\and wife. but the pool opens at 6am, and this time of year the sun is up be 5:15am. so i can run\bike\swim\do a yoga class get home and shower and be at work by 9am(only a 20 min drive against traffic). if i dont work out in the morning the likelihood of getting a workout in the evening is not great. we just have to make it work for our lifestyles\committments.

If you want it enough, you'll find a way to do it. It's simply where priorities and drive are. I'm not saying your priorities and drive have to be there to get up early, but if it's TRULY what you wanted, you could make it happen--both getting to bed earlier/waking up earlier (given that job and or family life--like a brand new baby interuppting sleep--isn't a factor).  If it's simply a matter of will, you can adjust your will if you want to do so, but it takes discipline plain and simple.  I have to be at my job at 0630 in the morning, and I have to leave my house at 0600 to get there on time/little early. In fact, I have to be there at 0630 to do PT--physical training--but it's typically sub-standard to the training I need.  If you check my logs, you'll see that the majority of my swims and or runs start NLT 0500, some of my runs start around 0430.  It's not always fun, but I am DETERMINED to be as prepared for my Ironman as possible.  When I think about hitting snooze and skipping a workout, I imagine myself SUCKING during Ironman because I failed to get up an do my workout. That is a pretty good motivator for me, and up and out of bed I go. PLUS, it is a great feeling to get that workout DONE before the rest of the day starts.

I agree with having someone to be accountable to if you can.  I also have a hard time in the mornings.  Have never been a morning person for anything.  I am a sales rep, and so I make my own schedule.  I finally purposely started making early appointments so that I had to get up at a respectable hour.  I can't always train early in the morning like I would like because I am a single mom, but when I do It is most always with someone else or a group.

Used hit snooze all the time then 1 day I decided to give up using the alarm clock. somehow my body knows when it needs to get up and I go. the only time I ever even use my wifes alarm clock is on race morning as extra insurance, but Ussally I get up turn it off beefore it goes off.

Take the alarm clock and move it to the other side of the room.
Out of reach, set it to a music station you can't stand, Rap, opera, etc... and loud, real loud.
and 3x on the HTFU

Resurrecting this...

I think latrina has a really good point - she started being able to get up early when it stopped sucking. If you dread doing something, you'll put it off, worry over it, whine about it, make excuses. If you just accept it for what it is, you'll just get up and do it and drag yourself through it. If you look forward to it, see the positives (and not in some stupid fakey happy-go-lucky sort of way), then you'll actually start to look forward to it.

IOW, make getting up early your REWARD, not your punishment.

from cusetri "....the real reason getting up at 4:30 AM is so difficult for us is because we have the luxury of it being optional."

Love it - my new motivation for getting up

I have to thank all of you that replied with motivations for this thread.....after being lost ....agian...I decided to check in here last nite & read this thread and another one on the same subject & found the inspiration/motivation to get my a$$ outta bed this morning & get something done! So many of you had great ideas - I think most of them point to basically the same core principles -

1)do you want it or don''t you?
2)htfu
3)just do it

Thanks to all of you!

of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.
