wow...I glad he is ok...hopefully he will be able to race again...very interesting to read the comments after the story...the cyclists vs noncyclists...some people are just clueless when it comes to sharing the road.

I was at a cycling race today, watching the cat-1's racing by a circle intersection (forget real name), and there could have been horrific accidents, twice. THIS IS ON A CLEARLY MARKED RACE COURSE.

First, I was talking to a race marshal that was manning the intersection that people could go through when all riders had passed, and a lady tried to "sneak" inbetween the cones, until we yelled at her to stop. She told us "oh there's nobody here, so I thought I could go". Literally 10 seconds after we yell at her, the 3 lead cyclists come racing down the hill escorted by police.

Second, this older lady is driving down the wrong side of the road, going TOWARDS the hill the peleton comes from. We yell at her, she is shocked, and then goes around the circle intersection. The peleton arrives 30 seconds later.

*sigh*

I've tried so much harder to be a more aware driver after becoming a rider and seeing all the stupid s!%$ people do that can very easily kill people... why can't they?

WOW....

Put your bike in your trunk and go somewhere safe...
Bicycles belong on the sidewalks, not on the roads...

Where is a safe place to ride a road bike that is not on the road?
What do you do if there is no sidewalk?  Oh crap!  I have this great road bike, but my city only has sidewalks downtown... what do I do!

SOme of those people are just laughable...

seriously, I hope he recovers and can ride and compete again.

Those commenting are the idiotic drivers who make miami such a horrible and dangerous cycling city.

I think this one takes the cake.

seekgoodbegood: For all of you who defend these cyclists, I want my children to avoid them so they won't be hurt by or involved in an accident because these people assume the road belongs to them. When the county or city paves a bike path, they still use the road because the bike path just isn't enough. I'll take any poor driver over the best cyclist any day. I'm just sorry that pickup didn't hit anymore of them.

If he ever said that to my face, i swear i would kick his fat A$$ with my cycling shoes.

Ugh! I hate to see a story like this.

There was a car that got onto the park roads during the Tri I did this weekend - they were supposed to be closed! They slowed down cusetri because they were blocking the park entrance; when I got past them they were just driving along the racecourse like nothing was up... I'm glad noone was injured.

It's ironic how so many posters said that cyclists should ride on the sidewalk. They say that now, until their unattented kid walks right in the path of a cyclist forced to ride on the sidewalk. Then those same posters would say cyclists should stay on the road and get off the sidewalks.

What a sad world where there are so many self-serving people that are insensitive to their neighbors. I truly believe that 95% of the drivers do their best to avoid accidents, but it is the other ignorant 5% that give drivers a bad name.

"Even more idiotic, why would you close off a road that is ment for cars? Cyclist shouldnt have the same rights as cars. I am not sure how we ever got to this but i bet it was a damn liberal who started it...maybe sorenson?":

Paved roads were built before cars existed. At the time they were used mainly by horse drawn carriages. Then they invented the bicycle and they used roads for decades before cars became popular. Bicyclist allowed cars to share the road, not the other way around. You sir are a moron.

I don't know who posted that reply, but it's classic. I'm saving it.

I was there racing...and...it really was shocking and scary....!!!!

I'm still wondering and asking WTH....How this happened...????

A Bike Course closed for the car traffic...Off Course...there are marinas, a restaurant, a school, the Rowing Club, and entrance for the beaches to Virginia Key and Crandon Park along the Bike Course....but...there were polices officiers in every intersections and entrances or exits....controlling the cars that want to get in or out of these places....

What Happened????   Or the Police Officier at the entrance of the Restaurant where the incident happened...screwed up...or...the driver didn't wait for the Officier sign of green light to pass...It's under investigation and very soon We will know what really happened...

Migue..."We are with You...Sending positive Vibes on your way...Hope you have a speedy recovery...!!! "

Miguel Tellez is Ok...He was released from the Hospital yesterday...and...We received this last Up-date from the Race Organizator yesterday....

Dear Leonora,

As many of you know, Miguel Tellez, one of South Florida's best triathletes, was in an accident at today's race.  While initial reports seemed bleak, he is going home from the hospital today.  He has a cut on his left knee, a concussion, and some stitches in the head, but very minor considering that he crashed at over 40 mph!  Thanks for your concern and we hope to see him back at the races real soon!

Thanks for reading!
Sincerely,

I hate to say it, but a lot of arrogant cyclists create a**holes like this.  How many times have you been on a ride and saw another cyclist just blow through stop lights and stop signs as they bully the right of way away from motorists who have it?

Here in the SF Bay Area we have this lovely thing called "Critical Mass".  All of these pricks get together one Friday per month and do their best to completely infuriate every motorist in San Francisco.  Fights erupt and arrests are made and the whole debacle ends up on the news.  Now these pricks have come to my town, Petaluma, and are doing the exact same thing.  They managed to get a few of themselves arrested last go around.  What these morons don't understand is that they are creating these people who wish more of us were hit.

I'm 100% pro-cyclist and, being so, I think it's very important to understand that a lot of motorists feel this way.  The best way to handle that is not to attack them, give them the finger and to hog the road.  Obeying the same laws they have to and giving a friendly wave whenever you can will go a long way toward changing the stereotype the arrogant cyclists among us create.

Rant aside, I'm horrified that this happened to such an accomplished athlete, and during a race. It's hard to suppress the urge to wish someone would hang yet another absent minded motorist up by his/her toenails.

Bolding mine.

I know some of the police out there doing this are volunteering their time, but whenever incidents like this happen in races, I have to wonder what the cop was thinking.  We've had a couple accidents here where the cop was standing on the corner not paying attention, or didn't notice the pack of cyclists heading towards them, yet waved a car through.  It is really sad because as a racer (during a race) you expect that those police are out there to ensure your safety and well-being.  And 99% of them do a fabulous job and I can't thank them enough for it.  But that 1% sort of puts a damper on the whole group.

However, I won't speculate until more is known if this was actually a cops fault or the vehicle ignored the warnings.

The only case where the line that "the blame is on cyclists in general" comes into play is that most people who live down here in South Florida are from the Northeast, not Florida.  I know a lot of people from NYC hate cyclists because up there, they weave in and out of traffic, ignore all traffic signals, ride on sidewalks, ride into buildings, etc.

Down here though, people tend to be pretty good about the traffic laws, we stick to the bike lanes, stay to the right except when turning left.  The motorcycles down here are 100 times worse than the cyclists.  It all comes-down to sharing the road.  20 minutes of waiting to cross the causeway on a Sunday Morning is not worth injuring and possibly killing another human being.  That's why most of these (Multirace) races are on Sunday mornings.
