I bike about 20-22 mph when road is smooth and flat and the air calm..  My distance pace in a pool is about 1:45 per 100 yards.  I can walk a mile in 10 minutes.  9 minutes if I "run."

I weigh about 210.  I'm 43.

I just can't decide whether to register in my age group or with clydesdales.  What do you all think?

Register with what defines you to you.

I'm 45 and 195 pound female. To me, my weight defines me more than my age, so I register as Athena.

Not that winning is everything, but if this is your first tri, you may have a better shot at winning as a Clydesdale (or coming in 2nd or 3rd) versus registering as an age group athlete.

Regardless of what you decide, enjoy your first triathlon.  We want to hear all about your race afterwards!

I currently qualify as a Clydesdale and probably will for most if not all of this season. I agree with the winning thing. In general, it's more likely that I'd "place" in the Clydesdale group than my age group, so I will go with that as long as I can. I'm there to race against myself, but beating the competition wouldn't hurt either.

(Although I registered for my big race (1/2 IM) in September as an age grouper. I'm hoping to no longer be a Clydesdale by then.)

I pondered the same issue a year ago when I did my first race and ended up as an Age Grouper. I was older at 50, which was a factor, but the biggest thing was that one of my training objectives was to lose weight and not be eligible to be a Clydesdale. Guess I figured it would be a bit hypocritical if I raced as a Clydesdale. Since I was going to be a BOP'er in either class, I signed up for the one where I really wanted to be.

PS- I wish I could walk a mile in 10 minutes, it's hard enough for me trying to run that fast!

You walk a mile in 10 minutes?  Wow!  Your legs must be 7 feet long!  I'm lucky if I can keep my 12 minute mile pace for 5 miles...and that's running (read:  jogging)!

You are doing great!  Keep it up!

I was thinking the same thing... Whatever you decide just go ahead and Tri!

Just finished my first tri a few days ago...thank you...thank you.

My advice is it doesn't really matter. I considered both although I didn't plan on being over 2 bills when I raced. Free Hospital food took care of that and assured me I could go into either group I chose. In the end I found out my race had a novice group for 1st timers. It was a great time being with other people who were experiencing this for the 1st time.

My point is you will have fun no matter what group your in.
