That is just awful.  I hope they catch the people too.  I thought Albequerque was supposed to be one of the more rider-friendly places in the country.

Omigod! How did that happen!? Two people were hit by THREE different drivers?!?! WTF is WRONG with people when they are behind the wheel of a vehicle?! I mean, one case of hit and run is bad enough, but man, does humanity look bad when THREE people don't stop after hitting (and killing) someone....jeeze....

I don't know if Albuquerque is particularly cyclist friendly or not.  I know that town has some of the most inconsiderate motorists I've ever come across, so, sadly, this article doesn't shock me.  I live right near where that accident happened.  I don't like driving on that road, and wouldn't even think of riding a bicycle there.

That is sad.  Never riden in Albuquerque but I have family there and visit fairly often.  Always seemed pretty cyclist friendly to me.  Anyway, tragic story!

triOK, since you live close by can you explain why this is supposedly a bad intersection?  The news story seemed to present the story as though it's a bad intersection and not that the drivers should jailed.

I took a look on street view and didn't see anything out of the ordinary.  It looks like a pretty typical intersection to me.

Robyn:
That's terrible!

I'm getting so sick and tired of reading about this kind of shite.  What IS wrong with motorists?  Did anyone read the Slowtwitch thread about the pro cyclist hit during a race in FL and the awful, awful, hurtful comments about cyclists?

Seriously, what is wrong with people?  Why all the anger?  I never knew that I, as a cyclist, engendered so much hate from motorists.

What is wrong with people?!  And why did only one woman stop and help that poor man?  This shows a terrible part of human nature.  Everyone who was driving on the road at that time is to blame, regardless of whether they did the hit-and-run or whether they just saw it happening and drove on by.  They will probably never be caught, but I hope the knowledge of what they did haunts them for the rest of their lives.

That whole area is fairly tightly packed.  The road (Zuni) is a two-lane, but not very wide, and there are a ton of intersecting roads in addition to the "major" intersections.  I can't visualize the specific intersection of Zuni and Penn, but I know that there is generally a lot of traffic on Zuni in that area, and they all drive pretty fast considering the tight quarters and number of cars/people.  A lot of people live down there, and there are also quite a few businesses, etc.

Also, and I don't know if it was a contributing factor, Albuquerque drivers are notorious for blasting through intersections right as and for a few seconds after the lights turn red.  It's almost accepted as a practice.

Yeah, NM motorist are bad about running red lights. I was almost hit a few days ago crossing the street in a crosswalk because some dillweed ran a red light. She didn't even see me until I yelled at her for almost taking out my front wheel.

^^ According to that story, looks like the cyclist was at fault in the first crash.

Of course let me follow that by saying, this in no way excuses the driver from fleeing the scene, or the other two hit and run drivers.

This is my biggest fear. My prayers go out to his friends and family.

I almost got hit by a car (actually the trailer behind the car)...literally an inch away. he came so close the pressure from the trailer moved my left ear. A guy behind us rode up to us and said "holy cow man I thought for sure that trailer hit you"

I have since that day (4 years ago) have always rode with a mirror on my helmet.
