wwlani - 2009-07-22 9:38 AM I am in wasve 20. Lst year took me 3 1/2 hours to finish, so I figure I should finish around quarter to 1! Lucky me! Just don't swim over me when you pass me in the water ok?

We're wavemates!

So the rest of the week looks rainy and cool (for July). I would think that may keep the temp under 78. Oh, how wonderful a wetsuit legal race would be!

The thing that really sux about the late Olympic start is that you still need to arrive at say 5:30 - 6:00, because the place will be a zoo with everyone trying to park.

Me too --- wave 20.   And I won't be done  by noon.   If I have a good day, I'm hoping to be done at 12:15.   But it's gonna be HOT, so I'll slow way down on the run, and maybe not finish until 12:30.    Blah.

I cannot believe I am WAVE 22!!!  My group was wave 2 for the Phili olympic a few weeks ago - I was done before the heat kicked in.  I hope the run is shaded because the sun is going to be a killer - wear lots of sunscreen!!

At least no one will be swimming over me from the wave behind...  :-)  Do you think there will be any food/drink left?

I remember the second 5k being a lot less shaded than the first part.  Anyway, looking at the olympic map for the swim, which bouy is the halfway point for the swim?  ust trying to figure out pacing because i screwed myself last year.

lisareichmann - 2009-07-21 9:46 PM kcarroll, I'm with you in wave 22- and have the same thoughts about being last in the lake (swimming is also my weakest leg by far) so maybe we can keep each other company both before we start and as they're cleaning up the swim exit after us

I'm better on the bike as well.  I'm guessing the course will be kind of light by then which should work in our favor. Today's thinking has me wearing a red/white tri-top and black bottoms.  I don't know what we're going to do for two hours after they close transition.  I'd bring something to read, but that means the "peepers."  Good grief.  Gonna watch the Tour and quit worrying about this tonight.

See you there.  Kim

True statement. The "left" loop of that running trail is much more shaded than the "right" loop. There is a little shade once you get close to the turn around, but besides that its pretty open, unfortunately. Those wet/cold rags that CGI always has will feel good back there!

Just eyeballing it and working it a few times on Google maps, I am betting that the second left turn buoy is about halfway (i.e., the first HARD left turn).

Am I the only one with fingers crossed that it won't be wetsuit legal? I just got to thinking that if the water was 78 degrees the other day, even if it's wetsuit legal, it's gonna be pretty warm (76-77), couple that with the warm, humid air at 9:10 a.m. (give or take 20 mins), and it's going to be a hot swim in a wetsuit.

I'm glad at least part of the run is shaded. The second half would have been best, but first half is better than nothing .

I won't be wearing a wetsuit regardless of the temps, so I don't really care, I guess.  Except that I'll get my butt kicked even MORE by those in wetsuits.  Oh well.   I'm just hoping to finish.   A run in hot and humid conditions doesn't sound like much fun.

I am like 2 mins faster at this distance in a wetsuit, so I will definitely have to wear it if necessary. I also will wear a tri shorts and a tri top if it's wetsuit legal, but will race in a swimsuit if not. So, I'm hoping it's one of those things where it's without a doubt not a wetsuit race. I'd also like the experience of racing without a wetsuit.

I am hoping for a non wetsuit race,Im not a good swimmer but I think it would be cool to go old school speedo style. My tri shorts just dont cut it swimming in them they get to baggy, but they are ok if i have a wet suit, go figure. Either way its gonna be fun.

If it's wetsuit legal. I'm going wetsuit. When I did LavaMan (Lavallette) it was warm enough not to use wetsuit, so I didn't. Regretted it because you are faster in wetsuit. Told myself next wetsuit legal race, use it! (If not wetsuit, I plan on trisuit. Too much time putting on tri gear over wet bathing suit!)

Wow I'm late to the game.  Doing my first Oly.  Lot's of good and some not so good info here.   For those using a tri suit, try a piece of cloth tape across the pocket. My tri suit has just one pocket in the center of my back and I used a piece of cloth tape and it worked out fine, I just yanked it off when I got out of the water.  Didn't effect the suit at all.

I'm not psyched about wave 18 though.  If the heat cranks up early, hydration will be an issue.  The unshaded run on the second half has my worried as well.  The run is my weakest (yes, not the swim) and competing as a 265lb clydesdale....that run will hurt.

They really should have a Rhino category! But then I'd be in wave 33 by myself.... : 0

That's my plan. I am just afraid that 1.5 miles of swimming in a wetsuit when it's 80 degrees and humid out and like mid to upper 70s in the water will be quite uncomfortable. The water was 78 the other day, so I can't imagine it won't be much lower than 75 or 76 if it is wetsuit legal.

I was thinking about this issue this morning...wouldnt it be ironic if this was the first WS legal NJST, and also the hottest???
I am betting that it will not be WS legal, but I am not nearly as sure as I was the other day. It has rained a lot, and its pouring out there now, and temps/sun arent going to very high over the next couple of days, its just going to be humid and miserable. Ugh.

Agreed though...if its legal, its not going to be like 72-73, its going to be close to the 78 line. Regardless, I always go with the "if its legal, wear it" motto.

I hope that its not wetsuit legal. The swim is my strong suit (relatively speaking) even though I don't own a tri wetsuit. I think it would level the field a bit. Also I just did colonial beach a few weeks ago at 78 deg and it felt warm even without a suit! I'm in wave 16 which isn't too bad but ill still have time to eat with my family between.

I HATE when the water temp is so close to wetsuit legal. I want to wear one to help with bouyancy/speed (ok it probably doesn't help THAT much) but I overheated once when I wore it when the water was warm. Do NOT want to make that mistake again.

After feeling the water today (it was 75 or 76 this am), I don't think I'm wearing it. After sitting around until 9 (or thereabouts whenever wave 20 starts) I think I will be too hot to put it on.

Good luck tomorrow everyone, will look for peeps after the race!

Lani

Im # 2806. One of the ones waiting around till 9:15 to start. Will just miss the post race buffet opening by a few mins. Darn.

Larry, the RD (I think it was him) announced at pick up that the temps have been around 75 during the last few days when they check at 7am. Usually creep up to 78-79 during the day so it's still up in the air.

I hate rain, well at least on the bike. Perhaps the rain can hold off until I run, keep things cool? Think of the lovely finish line photos in the rain!
