annoying to clip in and out for all the 'all way stops' in my residential neighbourhood. Though, i think it's also important to be ready to stop because I can't tell what's coming with all the houses being so close to the street.

you don't need to clip out to stop ;-)

Depends on where you are and the definition of "stop."  Some cops around my town have given tickets to people that stopped but did not put a foot down.....

They tickets to people doing track stands?  I do track stands at every light/stop sign I can.

Yeah, sucks huh?  They get real strict here in the summer.  Even put up electronic signs saying "All Bicyclists Must Obey All Traffic Laws."

But you never know.  Depends on if he/she had a bad morning.  Couple weeks ago there was a large group, cop was at the stop, so everyone stopped, foot down.  Girl couldn't get clipped in and fell. Cop yelled out laughing "you don't have to put your foot down!"

Yeah, same here. Everyone once in awhile they crack down and you get a ticket if you don't put your foot down.

I came up to this intersection.  12 miles outside of town.  Zero traffic on the frontage road.  Clear view of all traffic.  Problem was there was a Dept of Public Safety car sitting right in the median staring right at me.  He had that look to him, "go ahead, make my day".  I came to a complete stop.

dps

Usually I slow way down and check the intersection out.  I tend to exaggerate leaving the intersection to make it look like I was really stopped.  The local bike club is really pushing obeying all laws, so I'm actually more afraid of them than I am of the cars.

DaveyG - 2009-06-26 10:25 AM Aside from being killed, I think the biggest risk with not stopping is creating a few more pissed off motorists. Even if you have the right away, or are not impeding another motorist, people don't like it much when they see cyclists dismiss the rules that they have to follow and act like they own the road.I feel exactly that way about motorcyclists. They illegally split lanes, get to the front of the light when they don't have to and ride my while waiting to cut me off in traffic. I'm very much opposed to motorcycles solely based on the behavior of 90% of those I come across. Anyone see the thread where the lady had wished more cyclists had been hit when Miguel Tellez was hit during a race? The reason she feels that way is because more than one cyclists has pissed her off.I look at obeying all laws while cycling like putting a little bit of good will in the piggy bank. Those motorists won't be the ones who brush by me at 80MPH on my long rides.

You need to do a little more reading. It may or may not be illegal to ride the white line to the front of a group, that's a state law (or maybe municipality), not a federal thing, and it's not illegal in quite a few states. Also, while they seem to be "riding your azz", that's because they have a much shorter stopping range than a car. I have more problems and get more nervous from cars riding my bumper than motorcycles. I can't remember the last time I had a problem with a motorcycle rider.

I stop at every one of them no matter what.   Just trying to set a good example.  Even if there are no other cars around, someone is looking out the window of their house.  (at least that's what I tell myself)  I grab my lane in city traffic at stop lights, when it turns green I'm back over closer to the white line to allow traffic to pass.  I don't live in a big city though, and honestly cannot remember ever being "given the business" by a driver.  The county I live in is host to a major portion of the IM Louisville bike route, so there are lots of cyclist's who come in and train over the course prior to the event and there is a decent number of other cyclist's out on our roads, so the locals are pretty used to seeing bikes around and fortunately we all coexist pretty darn well.

This is a picture of the intersection where I got t-bone by a Cadilac.  I was heading south (I had the view shown in the picture).  I did NOT have a stop sign.  As I looked towards the left I saw a car approaching and saw they had a stop sign.  I instinctively slowed as I got closer but could see the car pitch forward and it looked like they were gonna stop. Then, at the last possible moment, she punched it and came lurching across the road just as I was coming into the intersection.  Turns out, she was looking way back behind me and saw a car back there and wanted to get across the intersection before the car.  She never saw me until I was flying off of her bumper.

I post this just to say that biking is dangerous, period.  Being AR about stopping and putting your foot down does not make you 'safe'.  The rule of thumb I try to keep in mind is, "assume everyone else on the road is an idiot talking on their cell phone and not paying attention".  Right of way means NOTHING!

I've seen people bust 3+ minute track stands at lights.  A cop would have to be a total d-ck to give someone a ticket if they come to a complete stop, look properly and go from a dead stop.

OK, this thread looks like a good excuse to post my bike wreck photos.  :-)

FWIW, I went to the ER in an ambulance but was not seriously hurt.  Can't say the same for my bike....Mr Felt took the brunt of the impact and laid down his life for me!  :-)

In areas with lots of traffic (or traffic at all), I come to a complete stop.  There are a few intersections where there is no traffic for miles, so I slow down and look again to make sure there really isn't anyone there and go through.

It definitely depends on where you are. For me though, if there are ANY signs of cars within hearing/visible distance, I stop cold.

Warning to Californians - I've seen cops give out $350 (!!!) tickets on the Pacific Coast Highway to cyclists rolling through stoplights and stop signs in SoCal as well as in town in NorCal in the Menlo Park region in town in the past 3 weeks. To be fair, these are fairly trafficked areas with cars, and it's very dangerous to blow though stoplights and stop signs.

That $350 ticket (!!!) really scares me - it's pretty obscene, in my book, but it's reality.

Always, its the law here, I trackstand usually BUT when I ride in Idaho I treat it as a yield per Idaho Law

Edited to add: in Super Busy intersection where my ability to be seen is poor OR where I have experience with people running the stop signs even when I was driving I will Ghost a car across. (pull up next to a car going straight and move up to the stop sign with them, stop and then follow them through trying to keep a bit ahead of their back bumper and at least three feet to the right of them. Never had a driver complain and when I asked a cop about it he indicated he would not ticket me for that as he felt it was smarter than getting hit.

Wow, Rogillio, that hits home.  You wrecked on 'my' bike.  Scary to see your bike after a wreck for some reason...

Anyway, you should think about wearing some brighter colors for better visibility Tongue out

Wow, great thread.
So...I stop at stop signs and of course red lights. As a automobile and motorcycle driver, and a lifelong bicycle rider, it is a topic near and dear to my heart.
So, at a red light, I will stop. However, as I will often then pretend I am pedestrian and ride across if there is no traffic.

Also, I decided to look up Florida state laws on bicycles and found out that bicyclists have the right to ride two abreast in a lane that is too narrow for a car to pass safely (there are specifc measurements that make a lan "safe") in addition, if it is a two lane road, bicyclists don't need to stop and get out of the road even if they are slowing down traffic.
However, on a sinlge lane road, bicyclists have to get out of the way if they are slowing down traffic.

I think the bicyclists that give the rest of a bad name are the ones who act like they own the road. I have to assume these are the same ones who act like this in a car.

Just curious.  I see you are from CA.....I always thought that was legal in CA?  Is it not?

Sorry to the highjack.

~Mike

It is legal in California.  Lots of motorists don't know that and so get resentful when they see motorcyclists doing it.  Of course, lots of motorcyclists "split" lanes in a totally dangerous way and that makes motorists cranky because if we take out a motorcyclist, the paperwork woudl be tremendous.  JK.

I live in a small town in Southern Cal and we have a big group of cyclists that come through on Saturday mornings.  They stop in our little town and drop a bunch of money at the local Starbucks and then ride on.  They used to completely ignore the stop signs and the cars (small town = low speed limit), which made the locals unhappy.  The cops had a chat with the leaders of the group and said that they didn't expect everyone to clip out at the stop signs, but they had to slow down, look, and yield the right of way and if they didn't, then tickets were going to be given. The group agreed and there is a lot less animosity toward them and everyone seems to be happy.

I live in the middle of nowhere so I usually roll stop signs.  You can see cars coming for a long way out here.  If it's a blind intersection, I come to a full stop.  Always a full stop when in traffic.

What stop signs?  If there were any, I missed them because I was trying to pause my Ipod so I could answer the phone. Sheesh.

Seriously, I won't ride on regular old public Michigan roads. Michigan is such an auto-dominant state most people treat traffic signals as a suggestion, rather than the law. People consider their car and their timetable the first priority, and cyclists rank someplace between nuisance and rodeo clown for their bumpers.

I now ride at recreation-friendly parks, one of which has no stop signs, and the other can have up to 3 (depending on the loop), or on my cross bike on rails-to-trails or single track, where there are very few stop signs. But where there are stop signs, it's 100% stoppage. The alternative is being dropped off at home through your mail slot.

Here in Idaho the law says that cyclists must slow to a reasonable speed before going through a stop sign. Not stop.  Laws for cyclists have been on the news a lot the past few days since three cyclists have been killed in the past four weeks.

The biggest abusers are the ‘fixie pixies’ around here. You [know,] the kids on fixed gear bikes or vintage road bikes in their skinny jeans, retro sunglasses, no helmet and no idea about bike safety or laws. In my opinion this generation of ‘cyclists’ are going to cause the rest of us a large number of headaches and abuse from motorists. I hate these people. Unfortunately, they dominate not only the critical mass, but also events like local brewery East End Beer 's annual "keg ride" (where a group of cyclists accompanies the keg of the first batch of Pedal Pale Ale of the year to the bar where it will be first served, at about 6 miles an hour...), not to mention about 3/4 of the city in general.
