PA law says bicycles (or "pedalcycles") are vehicles, with all the rights, but also all the responsibilities, of a car.

So I do the same thing the cars do at stop signs -- I drop to about walking speed, then roll through. (In the part of Michigan where I grew up, we call that a "California stop", but it's about the same as the "Rhode Island Roll" cited above...) Red lights, I actually stop for, but once you get outside the actual City of Pittsburgh, there are surprisingly few of them around here.

Usually I unclip. slow down, look, look, look and go.  If it is a multilane intersection or if there is any question/doubt or visibility issue even if I don't actually see a car, I stop.

I stop because it is the law.

I stop because as cyclists, we want to be treated equally on the road by motorists.

I stop because I don't want another cyclist swerved at because a motorist was upset that he saw me run a stop sign.

There is absolutely no reason to run a stop sign.  And for those that say it interupts their training, stop lights interupt my driving but I do not run them.  Stopping at a stop sign will not hamper yoru training.

Sorry, this is a big pet peeve of mine.  Rant off.

I generally agree in most cases, but every area is different and in a city neighborhood there is a stop sign on EACH block. When your riding down the short side of the block there is a stop sign the depth of 2 city lots (So about every 300 ft) and rarely any cars there. If I were to stop at every stop sign between here and the 1 mile I ride over to the main road I would have to stop about 16 times or something silly like that, so in this case I slow down check for cars and go.... but in most situations I will stop like I'm supposed to.

learn to track stand, no more clipping out at stop signs.

It was funny the other day I went on a typical road route around town, all the people just blowing through the stop signs in a busy section of town, I think I was the only one stopping.  The local cops here have been cracking down and giving tickets, even giving tickets to people on a charity ride recently.  I'll admit though that in a quiet neighborhood, I don't.

I slow way down, unclip if needed, stop if there is a car coming until I am SURE they are stopping, and then go. If it's clear I roll through. I never used to wait for the cars until I got hit when a woman failed to stop at the sign. It just takes once and you'll be a lot more careful because as others have said, I now assume everyone behind the wheel doesn't see me and doesn't obey traffic laws.

good point - car coming is car coming whether you have right of way or not.  laws of physics (mass) outweighs civil law.

I think there are times when it is better to run a stop sign than to come to a complete stop.  If you and a car are appraching a 4-way and you are getting there first and the other driver clearly sees you and is clearly stopping.  Then I personally feel it is inconsiderate to then make that driver wait while I come to a complete stop, unclip, put my foot down, say a silent prayer, fumble around trying to get clipped in again and start again from a dead stop just becasue I was AR about 'stopping' per the letter of the law.  Like others have said, the biggest gripe motorist have with bikers is it slows them down.

I haven't read many of the responses but this got me thinking about my ride yesterday.  there is a very popular ride in the foothills SW of Denver called Deer Creek Canyon.  Cyclists like the canyon because of it's long challenging climb and the road is in pretty decent shape.  Problem is for most of the ride there is not much of a shoulder and there are frequent altercations between motorists and cyclists.  As a result, on the weekends it is pretty heavily patrolled by the police.  Yesterday I was riding up the canyon and there is only 1-stop sign that you need to worry about for the entire canyon.  I am coming up to it and I always look before going through it (I only stop if I see traffic or a cop).  Well, I see a cop up the hill on the intersecting road and i know I will need to stop.  Unfortuantely a rider about 1/4-mile in front of me didn't look!  She blew through the stop sign and the cop chased her down sirens and all!  She was ripping the cop a new one when I passed them.  I actually think the cop caused more of a hazard by pulling someone over in the canyon as the only way to get around him was to cross the double yellow.  I don't know if he ticketed her.
