Pre-race routine:

Woke up a little early. Prepacked the car, so just needed to eat and head out. Two pieces of toast with PBJ. Funny that the caravan was on 75 again. I pulled out of my house and there were two cars with bikes on them, we got to 75/85 and half the cars had bikes on them. Pulled into my parking space and realized Chris was parked beside me. Too funny.
Event warmup:

Normally, I do not do much for warm up, but my neck was stiff and I felt like I needed to warm up the swim muscles. So, I swam out the second buoy and back (200 yards), stretched out the shoulders, swam to the second buoy again. Felt better afterwards.
Swim
  • 11m 43s
  • 656 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

I got second in my AG! I lined up to the left and spotted my draft target. Most people were jammed on the right side. On go, my target took off as expected and I jumped on the draft right away. He pulled my to the second buoy ahead of the pack. I sighted perfectly the whole time. I came close to the buoys each time...dead straight lines. I even did a fancy free/back/free turn on the last buoy.
What would you do differently?:

While a nice swim, it was still slow by my expectations. There is more to give. I have to go some speed work to improve this.
Transition 1
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

Long uphill run from the swim. I had good legs, so I ran hard to my bike. I put on socks which added time. I noticed a guy that had his cycling shoes pre-loaded and noted my efforts v his. I got to the mount line just as fast and did a flying mount which put me way ahead of him. All that said, the time was very average.
What would you do differently?:

I do well on the swim, then give the time back in transition. Need to work with my new helmet. I was a little slow with it.
Bike
  • 42m 54s
  • 14.3 miles
  • 20.00 mile/hr
Comments:

I really thought I did better on the bike. I had a few spots that I backed off due to HR spikes, but I was passing lots of people and did not get passed that much. Given the extremely low cycling this month, I am still fine with the result.
What would you do differently?:

More miles.
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

3rd fastest in AG. Nailed the flying dismount. the workers were all yelling at me to slow down going to the red line. I stepped off Cyclocross style with great forward momentum. I just kept running. Quick change...ran while putting on my hat and race belt.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I felt I did this one with a little style.
Run
  • 27m 8s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

Crap...another slow run. While it had a few nasty hills, I should have tried to push harder. I did not felt bad, just did not feel good. I did start to come around at mile 2 marker. So, I targeted a guy ahead and tried to run him down. When I caught him, I started to think I blew the run. I had more and should have used it.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder, accept it will hurt and "git r dun"
Post race
Warm down:

Kept walking, got some water and food. Hooked up with Chris and replayed the race. I was much faster in that version! Ran into some other people, then walked down the hill to cheer for the finishers. Spread the good karma to get it back.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Low training volume. The only consistent thing in my season is swimming. The result speaks for itself. My ramp for Tug starts in another week, so I am hoping this is not the limiter when I write that RR.

Event comments:

I thought the race was just ok from a management stand point. Food was average at best, ran out of water and HEED under the pavilion. Small stuff. I wish they would mark the run course out of transition better. Lots of people were blocking people leaving the race while trying to watch people finish. They have to take another look at this part of the race.

Those flying mounts/dismounts are the envy of the civilized world..I'm just too chicken to try.

Your full race schedule is the right way to go - now's the build to Tugaloo! Congrats on your day!

"I even did a fancy free/back/free turn on the last buoy."

You show off.  I do some sort of free/doggy paddle/free.

Great Race and the top 10 finish is really sweet.

Great Race!

That definitely sounds like a fancy turn! I normally play bumper cars at the turns.

Great T1 & T2. Solid times considering you put on socks. Besides, that is a very long tranisiton area so great job!

Way to hang tough, and still put out a 20 mph/avg with low volume this month.!!!

Fancy free roll turns around the buoys in addition to flying mounts (ouch?!?) and dismounts means that I need a few lessons from you on these subject matters.

Way to make Maria proud with the swim time ... she often thinks the other two sports are superfluous anyway
