Age Group Rank = 9/105
Pre-race routine:

early wakeup call for breakfast and then off to the race site by 4:15am. setup transition and then some warmup.
Event warmup:

managed 10min fo ez running and then 5min of ez swimming prior to start.
Swim
  • 32m
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

swim start was really choppy due to wind blowing into cove at swim start. started way too far to the right to avoid a bunch up and notice in the first 50m i was already way behind the leaders in my wave. drank lots of water until the first turn and after the second turn i felt really beat. the wetsuit got really hot and i just couldnt regain my composure. i did a good job swimming thru the other waves but i was so tired in the second half of the swim. once i made the last turn for the exit i had to swim across the lake. that chit was rough. the water was so rough it was like swim in the ocean. i was so up and down i really felt disoriented and couldnt wait to get done. once i exited the water i was weary as i tried to run to my bike.
What would you do differently?:

no wetsuit!!!!!!!!
Transition 1
  • 02m 4s
Comments:

took to much time getting my crap together. the ground was really rough so i put my shoes on to run.
What would you do differently?:

go go go
Bike
  • 2h 34m 20s
  • 56 miles
  • 21.77 mile/hr
Comments:

plan was to take it ez out of the park and then hammer. i followed the plan and feel like i really hammered. i think the hammering in the headwinds really did me in. i climbed the hills hard but near the end i felt beat. the rain came near the end and the last 8 miles or so was a massive down pour. took it ez on the turns with the wet surface thru out the ride but felt a really pushed the downhills vs previous years. on the last climb in the park the left quad seized up and it took some hard rubbing to work it out before T2.
What would you do differently?:

not much other than continue to train more in the big. last year in the same conditions (maybe less wind last year) i biked a 2:42 so i know i am making some nice gains.

Transition 2
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

had to ring out some of my gear before putting it on due to the rains
Run
  • 1h 32m 57s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

my legs were pretty beat from the beginning. i tried to go out tough and hold on. i ran the first 3 miles in 19min but then i turned the corner to head up the first big hill and slowed a bunch. it was a slow baby step up the hill and it was the same for the next 2 hills. i felt good after getting over the hills but overall there was no extra gear to push it. i lost a spot early in my AG but that as it. two other guys in different AGs past me but otherwise i did most of the passing. in the end i ran well but it was not what i expected. i ran the last 3 miles hard like the first 3 miles but the stuff in between was weak. i now know i cant wing a good half IM run when i dont put many double digit runs in leading up to the race.
What would you do differently?:

run train more
Post race
Warm down:

try not to cramp up. ate some food, drank a honey milk protein drink that almost made me puck and then it the miller lite. later hit the tx roadhouse for ribs and then a big nap before we hit the bar later that night!!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

training and stress

Another race, another great job despite some "issues".

One day you'll have an issue-free race and crush the course. At your level, it's all the little things that become so big.

The journey of wiping out that 22:27 continues...

Once again nice job and you are in a very tough AG.  Better job on those transition times though!  You are so close to that kona slot, keep it up and it will come!  Relax and enjoy some downtime and refocus for podium spot at longhorn 70.3 then refocus for IMSt george!

Congrats on the PR!

I'm with you on the swim.  No wetsuit at that temp.  Just too hot!  The wind and waves just made it worse.  If it were just wind, just waves, or just heat, it'd have been OK, but all three together made it a bit miserable!
