Subject: Triathlon vs cycling shoes
I'm new at triathlon and in the process of buying a road bike (Scott contessa speedster '09). Ofcourse I need some shoes to go with the bike Wink so I was thinking about a pair of SH-TR51 women's shoes.

Is it ok to use triathlon specific shoes for training or do I need cycling shoes instead? I won't be racing for quite some time, but then again I don't want to spend a fortune on 10 different pairs of shoes.
So what do you use to train for a triathlon = cycling shoes or triathlon shoes?

And if anybody has any thoughts about the previously mentioned Scott bike or the tri - shoes: I would love some input!

Thanks!

I have been training in tri shoes for about 2 years or so now, never owned regular cycling shoes. I am too cheap to have different pairs though, but I bet cycling shoes are more durable and transfer more power.

I only ride with tri shoes. The ones you have mentioned are well used in the pro ranks so I guess they're good enough

I have both.  I normally only use the tri shoes for races or for training rides just prior to races.  My road shoes are more comfortable for long rides, I think in part because they have three straps versus the one wide strap on the tri shoes.

X2, and they seem to be more adjustable with the additional straps and buckle system. However, I have no porblem with weraring my tri shoes on long rides. Certainly many can live with only tri shoes, just as many here live with only a tri bike.

If I could only have one pair I would much rather be doing road rides with triathlon shoes than doing triathlons with road shoes.

I only have road shoes. And have never owned tri shoes.
But my thoughts were, I only race about 3 times a year.  But ride the bike 2 to 4 times a week for trainging.  And I only see a benefit to the trishoes if you are racing a tri.
So I went with the road shoes that were better vented and had more straps for a nicer fit.

I have both and generally only wear my tri shoes in tris and for training before hand. So far this year my only race has been a half iron distance and I chose to go with my road shoes because they are wide (couldn't find affordable wide tri shoes) and on a longer ride don't cause numbness or hot spots which I experience in the narrower tri shoes on rides in excess of about 30 miles. I say wear what is comfortable. If you intend to perfect your flying start off of T1, then tri shoes are a must. But otherwise, if I only had one pair, it would be my road shoes.

I purchased a pair of the SH-TR50's last year and they have replaced my sidi road bike shoes completely, I have no desire to pick up a second pair as the Shimano's seem to function fine...I ride anywhere from 100-150 miles a week (usually in 30-40 mile increments) and they are v comfortable, great power transfer, super stiff and generally v comfortable. I dont miss my 'road' shoes at all.
