I was looking at the Beast in St. Croix, and am curious:  how does one possibly train for that bastid? What do some of you do to simulate hills where they don't exist? Would it help to do repeats at the hardest gear in the steepest hills you can find? How about carrying extra weight?

For running, there is a parking garage here that I use. For cycling, indoor trainer. For the beast, crampons and a harness.

Riding any hills in harder gears (low cadence) will help to build power.

Riding into a strong headwind will also help, although obviously wind speed is not something you can control.

Also, just ride HARD.  That's all hill climbing is.
