Subject: Ironman schedule question
Hi All, I have been a runner for 24 years and run with a local athletic club, focused on the IM UK 2010, and for the last 2+ months I have been going at the beginner ironman program to see if my body can handle it at 40!!

My question is with 12 months to go to the IM UK, I know from reading other threads 12 months training will lead to burn out, so with where I am below, and having just finished base 1, what should I do now to maintain what I have built for the next 2-3 months, when my plan is to move to base 1 intermediate not basic.

Found getting to the end of base 1 fairly straight forward, use RPE and heart rate zones, found the swimming tough to start but now at 2+ miles front crawl, enrolled on total immersion weekend to build economy into swim. Bike going well, 3 plus hours fairly straight forward, just building on MPH. Runs straight from the bike are not an issue. Find SiS nutrition really good and have a solid nutrition plan so far.

Your help would be really useful.

What about registering for a HIM ?  I signed up for IMCOZ 12 months out, and then registered for a HIM so I could have something to focus on/ train for the short term.

It sounds like you have a plan (20 weeks?) to get you ready for IMUK.  If so, your goal now is to be ready to hit the workouts the first week of the plan as written.  Burnout occurs because people spend too much time trying to train and lose track of the "fun" of just going for a bike ride without worrying about HR, pace, cadence.  They also get burned out because they keep pushing hard, hard, hard for too long.  Trust that your training plan can get you from a 2-hour ride (at the start of the plan) to a 5.5-6 hour ride at the end of the plan.  You don't need to spend the next 4 months trying to get a 4-hour ride in every weekend.

I did a 30 week program for Placid and I am burnt out. I cannot even begin to picture 12 months of training. Forget about IM for now. You got a great lifelong base for running - you'll be fine - you can handle it. Just get out there and tool around on the bike - swim 1/week. Do a sprint or something else. I wouldn't focus on IM yet. Just don't even think about it. Mentally/physically/emotionally, it's very challenging.

This is coming from someone who only has done olys so I don't know from personal experience, but when I was asking a local coach about signing up for their 7 month program and told her I would be base training all winter she told me that I needed to take 3-4week TOTALLY off before starting the program...

So maybe a few rest weeks thrown in might help from burn out?
