Richmond, Virginia

Setup Events
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 14m 31s
Overall Rank = 46/182
Age Group = F 25-29
Age Group Rank = 6/21
Pre-race routine:

I stayed the night before with my grandparents. At about 2AM, I woke up to pee (I'd been hydrating), and I shut the bedroom door over my toe, scraping the skin off. I was bleeding, couldn't find a band-aid... Yeah, things weren't looking good at 2AM (but does anything look good at that time?).

Ate untoasted toast for breakfast (the toaster was broken) and headed to the race site after dressing and shoving my contacts in.
Event warmup:

Didn't really have time to warm up other then running back to my car to get my stuff. The line for packet pick-up was looong. I had 10 minutes to set up transition. Done. Ready to race. Ready to wait for 45 minutes.
Swim
  • 05m 22s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started swimming and slipped into my pace very nicely. About 75 yards in, I decided I didn't really feel like racing today. But I was there, I was going to do it and put some effort into it. About that time, I started passing people. The first two guys paused at the wall for me to pass. Then there was the guy walking in front of me. We made eye contact. I waited to pass, knowing the wall was soon. He didn't pause. So I passed in the middle of the lane. No more Ms. Nice Girl. He was walking behind a very slow swimmer who didn't want to stop. I passed them both and cut them off at the wall when I went under the rope. Smooth sailing after that. Hopped out of the pool and raced onward. Done about 0:18 faster than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Not hang back behind the guy walking. Smooth out my pool exits, as in not pause at the end but somehow propel myself up while swimming.
Transition 1
  • 02m 21s
Comments:

Long run around the Y to transition. Rocky run. Lots of mats this year. Yay! About 0:13 faster than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Get my shoes on faster!
Bike
  • 37m 52s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 19.70 mile/hr
Comments:

I pushed it on the bike, put real effort into. Most of the time, my computer read 20+, which is awesome! Slower going uphill, of course. I got passed by a few people, passed a few others. Not a single woman passed me. Great ride and I enjoyed it! Time was EXACTLY the same as last year.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. That was pretty much the perfect ride.
Transition 2
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

Quick stop to drop the bike and helmet off and went into the run. 0:13 faster than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 28m 28s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

I paused on the way out to drink water and then ran. I tried to find a comfortable pace and stick to it. My goal was to be steady and constant. I wasn't going for fast, just steady. I didn't stop at the second stop, wanting to keep my pace. Kept going. Turned around and paused for water. Slipped right back into my pace. Paused for water after the 2 mile mark. Kept running. Towards the end I picked up my pace a bit, but not having done much speed work lately has diminished my kick. A friend slowly caught me and passed me. Since it was a guy, I didn't feel too bad. I only got passed my one woman during the run (not in my age group), and that makes me proud. Kicked and sprinted a bit towards the end. About 5:30 faster than last year! Yes!!
What would you do differently?:

Would like to run faster, but that seems to be my biggest struggle these days.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, packed up transition, made phone calls, drank water and soda, ate a cookie (or two) and talked to all my friends. Highlight: taking a photo with the giant roach (my friend Brian).

Overall, I was about six minutes faster than last year! Woohoo!!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of speedwork in training. A body built for endurance, not speed.

Event comments:

Not my favorite race, but one that is easy to do. Lots of volunteers! Well organized and fun.

Great race today!

He cracked me up in the roach costume on the bike.  Must have been really hot to ride and run in!
