Total Time = 1h 19m
Overall Rank = 47/492
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 5/93
Pre-race routine:

Slept great, ate protein bar at 5:30. Rode to the start with Annette and Michelle at about 6:15. Ate a Fiber 1 bar at about 7:00. Plenty of time and enjoyed getting ready with the peeps, photo ops, etc.
Event warmup:

Swam around a few minutes about 10' before the start.
Swim
  • 09m 14s
  • 586 yards
  • 01m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water was warm and calm. Schoched up to the front of the swim start for the first time. TOTALLY paid off. Had absolutely no drama and open water all the way to the first buoy. At that point we started catching the previous wave and I did have to weave around a bit but overall minimal drama. Very excited to be second out of the water in my age group. The person in front of me ended up winning the whole race so in the results I show as first out of the water because they pulled her from the age group results.
What would you do differently?:

Start farther to the outside.
Transition 1
  • 03m 54s
Comments:

Slooooooooow. Lots of sand in toes, no sense of urgency, trying to let HR come down after swim. Looks like I could have ended up 2nd in my age group instead of 5th if I had had comparable T times. Back to basics!
What would you do differently?:

Need a bucket for feet and a small towel. Just deal with the HR and let it come down on the bike.
Bike
  • 38m 57s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.49 mile/hr
Comments:

Good job settling on the ride UP the hill. Lots of people were just pounding it out right away and I ended up passing them just a few minutes after reaching the top. Took a honey stinger gel at about mile 8 which was perfect.
What would you do differently?:

Could I have pushed harder? HR average seemed plenty high but I may have left a little in the tank, especially on the flat loop.
Transition 2
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

Meh....
Run
  • 24m 55s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 19s  min/mile
What would you do differently?:

Might have been able to push a little harder on the flat after about mile 1.5. Great push at end and hella sprint finish with two other racers! Definitely left it all out there and gave the support crew a show. Exciting!
Post race
Warm down:

Um, yeah, the chip gatherer people need to give ya a second to catch your breath before you have to stop! They were like 5' after the finish line! Lots of water waiting for our fellow finishers and didn't have any recovery food until 11 AM.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Confidence on the bike.

Event comments:

Awesome race support, very friendly. Totally loved being there with Annette and special guest star Michelle! Missed having Mark there but Steve and Ross were awesome! Great host familys with Ms. Diana and Sir Patrick and the Scherers splitting the duties!
