Great replies, everyone, thanks.

Here are my stats:

For a 750yd continuous swim (which, incidentally, is the longest I've ever swum without stopping!) my pace is 2:01 per 100yd. My fastest 100 is 1:34.

Looks like I should expect to pull up the rear of MOP, perhaps? Hopefully I'll be able to draft, although I've never tried that before.

My goal is 30 minutes for the 1500m open water swim. I'll post back after the 21st and let you all know how it went!

bock

I can sustain around 1:20-1:25 per 100 in long swims right now. Used to be a lot faster when I was swimming in college. Now I'm still in shape, its just a round shape. During the swim I usually am a FOP'er and onsistantly get worse from there. I really need a lot of work on my running. I wouldn't worry about where you are in the pack, just concentrate on maintaining your speed and keep to your race. Don't get in a swim off with someone and kill yourself too early. Its happend to me and that makes it a lot harder for the rest of the race. Stick to your pace and you'll be fine.

In a mile swim, I can easily sustain about a 2:12 pace per 100yds. Now if I do X100 yds, it's down to about 1:45 average. They tend to slow down as I get to my 4th or 5th one. In the race I'm usually faster, coming in at just under 15 minutes for a half mile swim which was upper MOP. The wetsuit helps too.

I was MOP among all of the wetsuiters at the RCP Tiburon Mile (Angel Island to Tiburon in SF Bay) last sept.

Right now, I think my distance pace in the pool is right around 1:45.  Today I swam a pb 400 free in 6:38

Last year in my first race I was at the very back of the pack with only 5 people exiting the water after me. My pace was even slower than 3 min/100 meters. The swim distance was less than 500 meters. I think I'm faster now but not much.

My sustainable 100y pool pace is right in the 1:25 to 1:30 neighborhood when talking race pace swimming.  In recent 1500m swim with wetsuit in open water with chop, sighting, course navigation etc, I slowed to an approx 1:45 pace which was still suprisingly FOP in our swim wave.  Good luck in your race!

Slow. In open water, I've been passed by coral.

I just did ~ 35min for 1500m in open water. MOP overall finishers. Slow, but darn steady pace.

As an example of how fast swimming doesn't get you much, a friend of mine just did Wildflower half I/M and was 11th out of the water, finished in 5:16.  The person that finished directly ahead of him was 788th out of the water, but was 8 minutes faster on the bike, 1 minute faster in T2 and 3 minutes faster on the run.............

Having swimming as your strong leg sucks.
