I just rolled my ankle yesterday on my last training run. It looks like it will heal in time for Saturday, but if it doesn't and I need tape, do they do that for you in the medical tent pre-race?

Anybody knows anything about the wind conditions for Saturday?  Still contemplatinga a 1080 front wheel but not sure about the wind.  Any last minute recommendations?  Thank you much all.

Nope, that is (should be) part of your personal pre-race prep.

Hey All - a local online endurance mag did a little Q&A profile of me heading into Oceanside.  Thought you might find it interesting to read about one of your fellow BT boardmates

Don't know if you all saw this at the expo, but the USAT is allowing age groupers to leave shoes clipped in on bike.  There was a note on the screen for the course talk video as well.

Good luck to everyone this weekend. I heard it is a tough but rewarding race, especially if the water is cold. I will be thinking about you guys and looking forward to some good race reports. Who knows, maybe next year for me?

Wow, was that an amazing day! My first HIM, and that bike course definitely beat me up some, but I still finished (6:52:26) and had the time of my life! I drove out from Texas for this, and it was certainly worth it!

Hope everyone else enjoyed things as much as I did. I'm definitely considering coming out for this again next year!

Am I the only one who feels like they had their legs run over by a truck? I was not expecting that much of a headwind on the back of the bike course.

I live here on the base and was surprised by the wind from San Mateo thru the downhill into the 25mph zone. I was running 404s and got blown around badly there. The mostly tailwind on the long descent into the air station and the 11 miles back to the harbor more than made up for it!

Big fat DNF back spasms at mile 36 on the bike. I was ahead of last years pace and was having a blast until then.
I gave up my rear wheel to another racer so they could finish they were ran into when they flatted and had their rear wheel cracked.
5 minutes in the medical tent with ice on the back seemed to have done the trick. I feel about 95% now.

I did not expect that much wind either.  I was running 9.0s front and back and that long descent through the no-pass, 25 mph zone was about as close as I've come to losing control.  Another rider and I shared a "whew" when we got to the bottom safely.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that downhill section is why the event is no longer a full Ironman.

Ah..... the lovely winds..... I had a rear disc and  an 808 on the front.  It was very difficult to control the bike, and found myself spending most of the time out of the aero bars and getting pass by everybody (including road bikes), talk about having a very frustrating day - Note to self for next year - Rear = 808 or may be a 1080 (defenitely not a disc!) and a 404 on the front.  The hill was challenging but not that bad, very doable.   My first CA HIM and I will definetely do it again - The course can be so much fun with the rigth set up.  Congratulations to all of you and see you next year!  Cool       Time to start training for Arizona IM now..... anybody knows about the winds there!?

Here's a link to one our club member's photo gallery from the event.  There's a definite focus towards pros and TCSD members, but there are also some good high quality general race shots.

We Marines don't refer to it as "deadman's curve" for nothing. A few rollovers and late night wrecks over the years. Despite being reshaped and straighted out as much as possible.
It's my understanding a competitor died there after hitting the guard rail several years ago; as for the IronMan distance I believe it might have been too long to keep the base roads closed since it was two laps. I personally wouldn't look forward to two trips up San Mateo hill.

I think I saw the guy with the pancaked wheel in the hills.  Hopefully by paying it forward like that karma will smile on you next time. Really outstanding gesture on your part! Hope the back is better.

Finally took mine off yesterday.  I even unpacked already which is a minor miracle.  Legs are almost back to normal.
