Subject: RE: cyclist doing push ups on the sidewalk...WHAT?!
meblack - 2009-07-28 9:16 PM So I saw something really weird today on my way to work that I just had to share (I actually had to do a double take)...I was driving by and I see a cyclist down on the sidewalk...his bike off to the side...doing PUSH UPS while the light was red...in his helmet and gear and everything

I find this really weird...is it really necessary to do this? can't you just wait till the light turns red?

It also tells me that this person is really into showing off and is desperate for attention....weird, weird, weird....

This doesn't make jogging in place at a read light seem weird at all...actually pretty normal.

What do you think?

Or they honestly don't care what a bunch of strangers who are not getting any exercise think. I somehow doubt he was riding his bike and doing pushups (not wasting his time sitting at a light) to show off and impress the strangers passing by who will never see him again. Was he supposed to take off his gear to do the pushups? Why is doing pushups on the side of the road any stranger than riding in fancy gear on expensive bikes (yes, we triathletes love our fancy gear...me included)/ running/ swimming in lakes? OK, on that last one I am playing devils advocate because I do think it is a little odd, but I am more inclined to say "go for it dude, you're doing more than me!" than judging without knowing the details and the person.

X2 - I mtn bike in a county park and come across half downed trees and will do lifts and presses with them to break up the bike routine and get some ST in at the same time.  I am sure people think I am nuts but then again I ride my bike all winter long as well so maybe I am nuts!

Duuuude. I can only imagine the look on people's faces as you do a clean and jerk with a tree limb. love it!!

I don't think it's anyone desperate for attention--it's someone getting the most out of their workout...so what if it happens to be in a public place.  I am in the Army and we have plenty for runs where we'll do a mile, pull off to the side, do some pushups, situps, flutter kicks, etc. and then pick it back up again. Good for him on making the most of his workout!

Guilty as charged! It looks really dorky with all the bike gear on as well.

Pull Ups (or what I do weak man pull ups ) on the monkey bars are great as well.

Full bike gear, on the monkey bars, going rep for rep with an 8 year old, shouting "WATCHAGOT NOW, SON?!?!?!!!! YOU BETTER RUN HOME TO YOUR MOTHER!!!!!"

x2.

When my bf and I first started running together he was so sweet and would actually wait for me to catch up with him on the trail to encourage me. While he was waiting, he did pushups! I heavily encouraged this ... nothing like coming around the corner to see your hottie, shirtless, sweaty boyfriend doing pushups on the trail! Oh my.

I recently moved all my weights to the corner of two major roads in the area and set up shop right beside the homeless guy and his dog who are begging for money. I lift all day long in my tri shorts and tri shirt with my Oakleys and compression socks on. I also keep all my swimming gear handy (kick board, fins, etc.) just in case anyone wants to see that. That's not weird is it? Wink

Nope, perfectly acceptable, except that Triathlete's are not supposed to lift weights   That is what all the weird looks are from.

Does he spot you when you go heavy - even though it will slow you race times down?

I thought you were allowed to lift IF you wear either your tri gear or one of these (which could be tri gear too!): http://www.news.com.au/common/imagedata/0,,5862946,00.jpg

As for the spotting, I don't so much lift the weights as mill about in the general vicinity ;-)

Rowdy - 2009-07-29 9:28 AM I don't know why your being so critical of somebody who is working out. I don't see where doing pushups while waiting for a stop light is a need for attention. The guy is working out. I would rather see him working than sit on his butt filling his face with Big Macs all day.

I agree pushups are pretty benign in themself.  Maybe it was HOW he was doing it/them?

I was lifting weights recently and a guy was doing inclined presses with dumbbells.  He rep'd out 10 tossed them down and started doing burpees, then did a fast walk around the weight room, stopping to look in the mirror doing pistols with his hands... hopping around and spastic movement throughout the whole ordeal, then back to the next set of inclined presses.  The guy was hillarious to watch.

Yeah it is weird, but probably not showing off. I mean, I have thought about doing that on a run, though not cycling, and thought it would be a good idea but don't really like the idea of being stared at. Also I probably do not have the mental toughness required to get off my bike or stop running to torture myself with pushups only to have to start riding or running again. Frankly, at a red light, I am a coaster so I never really have to stop. I imagine this guy raced to the red light and started doing pushups, other wise it wouldn't really make sense because the light is only red for like 30s to a minute.

The only thing that really gets me is at a red light. I mean how safe is that. Not safe.

So weird, unsafe, but I give the guy props, and am a little jealous.

How is it unsafe? He was on a sidewalk, not in the street or middle of the intersection.

Plus he still had his helmet on. Different, but not unsafe.

Well I suppose it could be done safely, however, I imagine when the light turns green buddy is going to be jumping up, clipping in, hopping the curb, and jetting off. That process, in traffic, strikes me as being unsafe. And, come to think of it, I would have the hugest head rush/light headedness upon finishing even a moderate amount of pushups, of course buddy is probably buffer than I and may not get light headed in the time allowed to do the pushups.

Anyways, I suppose my comment assumes some things, as any activity could be unsafe....don't matter really.

When I'm running I sometimes stop to do a couple of sun salutations (yoga). It really helps if my lower back is tense or hurting. It's generally on a exercise trail though; can't imagine doing that at a busy crossroads! If someone else does it, more power to them!

Never realized I was so frickin strange.  Not only do I do push ups about every 3 miles,  I will do pull ups at red lights...Why?  Because I can and I am old so people don't pay attention anyway.

Sure it was push ups and not pressups for his back.  After to much aero some extension feels good.  I do it riding all the time but have often thought it would be better to stop and do some pressups.

haha this thread is hilarious...and its pretty obvious that I offended some people...it just my OPINION people...

Yes, I still think its weird (but I guess triathletes are weird in general) and yes I still think there was some aspect of attention getting here...

Doing push ups while running is whole different scenario than doing it while biking...I never even thought of the safety aspect till someone mentioned, seems like you should be paying attention to when the light is turning and what car is doing what in the intersection...but than again biking with traffic is unsafe in general...

I think its hilarious that I remember reading this other thread about jogging in place at red lights and a majority of the people thought it was weird and unnecessary, but everyone here is all for push-ups with the bike...haha I love it

and yes I do enjoy bashing/pointing fun of people sometimes....its life...if I was friends with the guy i'd probably give him crap about it...haha. Like "you're hand got 3rd degree burns on them yet from those red light push ups?"

You can fry an egg on the sidewalk in arizona...ouch....just all seems uneccessary to  me, but whatever power to him...

Maybe next time I see him I won't do a double take...not likely tho.

The guy was probably just maximizing his workout time.  I know that when I strength train, I stretch in between sets.  That way, I don't have to do it afterwards and it saves me about 10 minutes.

x2

I also indulge push ups during breaks.  Last summer I rode cross country for a charity and when we would rest at the vans and grab some food/water every 10 or 20 miles some of us would get in some push ups.  Also if I am running sometimes I do push ups at red lights or if I see a park bench I will stop and do some dips on it.

When its tough enough to find time to get that 1-2 hrs of training in every day you might as well make the most of it!

So I was thinking about it more and you know what would get a real double take out of me. If someone went over to the copy machine at work, started it up and then dropped and did 10 or 20 push ups waiting for their copies to be done.

Anyone got any stories like that?
