So I saw something really weird today on my way to work that I just had to share (I actually had to do a double take)...I was driving by and I see a cyclist down on the sidewalk...his bike off to the side...doing PUSH UPS while the light was red...in his helmet and gear and everything

I find this really weird...is it really necessary to do this? can't you just wait till the light turns red?

It also tells me that this person is really into showing off and is desperate for attention....weird, weird, weird....

This doesn't make jogging in place at a read light seem weird at all...actually pretty normal.

What do you think?

Dude probably forgot to unclip, and when his a$$ hit the sidewalk he probably just started doing push ups like he meant to do that.

I've done the same thing lots of times on runs.  Gonna try it on my next ride if only to give someone else a laff.

My husband hops off his bike to do pushups... on the trainer in the basement. Not outside! And it's only when watching a game and the other team scores.

Happens to everyone eventually.

What else are you going to do at a red light?  Some people set a one hour alarm on their watch and no matter where they are, when the alarm goes off they do as many push ups as they can.  Gotta time your bathroom breaks when doing that plan!

Hmmm...that may be even weirder than the cyclist doing pushups....interesting tho....seriously he must have great multitasking skills being able to keep an eye on the light while doing the push up and than hop on the bike...clip in and get across before it turns red again. Sometimes I just zone out sitting out the light doing nothing...not realizing its green.

Yeppers! That would be my plan, though I don't yet do it outside of work. If you look in the strength forum or the challenge forum, there's the 100 pushup challenge. Could be he's doing that.

Beyond that, I've noticed that every single cycling training plan has strength stuff. As busy as we all are today, why waste the few minutes at the red light just sitting there cooling your heels when you can get your strength done, too? Seems like pretty good time mgmt to me.

As weird as it sounds people enjoy pushing themselves harder and harder.... Why not try to get on your bike and ride hard when you are winded from doing 50 push ups. When I was in the Army I used to do 50 pushups every hour... and I made all my privates do it too. It helps build strength... keeps the heart rate up and it is another way to push yourself. I bet that guy doing push ups on the sidewalk could do more than you ever could. I went from doing 85 in two minutes to 130 in two minutes by doing pushups every hour. Give it a shot and try not to diss someone elses effort. Just my two cents.

this makes me think of the movie Major League.  remember the guy that did pushups everytime he hit a pop-up?  that's funny.

i do it on runs sometimes.

I think the guy is awesome- good for him. I would rather do something than just sit there and catch my breath. If I could clip/ unclip worth a dam I would do the same thing!

I must say that it sounds normal to me,  but then I do 1 arm push ups every 3 miles on my runs.  Am I showing off?  Don't think so but if I am people can start throwing money...LOL

My boyfriend and I were doing this push up challenge last year and this one particular day you had to do a set of pushups every 30 minutes or so.  He got off of his bike at a red light and did them.  I thought it was silly so I didn't do mine, but to each his own, right ?

I don't know why your being so critical of somebody who is working out. I don't see where doing pushups while waiting for a stop light is a need for attention. The guy is working out. I would rather see him working than sit on his butt filling his face with Big Macs all day.

I was on a ride the other day in a busy part of town.  There was this guy on the sidewalk near a gas station doing tricep extensions.  There were no homes in the area and I remember thinking wtf?  Strange indeed.  Not judging....more power to the guy, it was just a really weird sight!

yea, it's not common to see that and it's not something I do.  But I use to run with a guy that would stop every 10-minutes or so to do push-ups.  I never considerred him much of a runner but he was fit...just slow.  He would burst out into a sprint then stop and do push-ups. When ever we had to wait for a traffic light he would start doing squats. It would crack me up!

I think that's awesome. Guy's probably trying to maintain a good level of overall fitness. Full disclosure being that i'm a crossfit junkie, but i do believe in the concept of avoiding being a fringe athlete, ie a marathoner who can barely do 1 pullup, a powerlifter who can't run for more than 3 minutes straight, a cyclist who can't do squats or dead lifts, etc. Constantly mixing it up and pushing yourself in different ways will make you more powerful in your own sport in the long run as well as help prevent injuries. I'll admit that it's awkward enough to be in cycling gear in public, let alone doing pushups on the side of the road, but i find it inspiring that he doesn't care how weird he looks. Just my .02

I don't know if it's that odd...during my base building this winter, when we were working on strength, I'd have to do sets where I rode hard on the bike, then hopped off and did pushups, crunches squats, etc, then got back on the bike.

I'm sure people have thought the same of me and my bootcamp clients - I make them run/cycle/whatever then stop and do intervals like p-ups and lunges ... and they don't always look like they belong to a specific training group, if they're spread out due to varying speeds.

I once demonstrated a few yoga poses inside a Home Depot - we were having a conversation, the person I was talking do didn't understand what I was saying, so I showed her. I don't think that's weird. But then again - see my sig line. ;-)
