Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 418. Haz told me to get ready. I ate some vector, had a coffee. His Mom dropped us off. Then we got body marked and jumped on the bus. The bus ride was uneventful. I ate a pb bagel..probably a bad move. Something new there. And we all know how I like to try new things for a race. Got my bike ready and headed down to change into wetsuit. Found CBASS and Bigtryguy and chatted them up for a while. First time to see CBASS for a few years. Great to see them. Then headed to the lake for the start.
Swim

  • 1900 meters
  • 02m 13s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started the swim in the middle. It wasn't good. Lots of start and stop and a few kicked people. I had a hard time keeping in line and by the end the waves were starting to pick up. I was happy with the swim for the ease of swim. I could do it twice so I know I am good for im.
Transition 1
  • 04m 52s
Comments:

Long transition but was trying to be under 5...good for me. No tea was drank in this transition contrary to some peoples belief.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Bike

Comments:

Best Ride ever. This was my first long distance race(if ever) that I did over 30k For sure the best bike ever. Was strong on the hills and kept the pace up for the rest of the bike. Tried GU CHOMPS for the first time for nutrition on the bike...bad Idea...wasn't able to digest them. Back to gels. Never seen very many people on the race. Down hill rocked. On a plus note I was able to pee ala tour de France by just canting and let it roll..no mess at all I was very very pleased with this. The aid station on the down hill was a very very bad Idea...
Transition 2

Comments:

Great Transition for me.
Came in pretty good.
Run
  • 2h 13m 51s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 06m 20s  min/km
Comments:

Bad Run. Started out sluggish but got the legs going. It was hot and my nutrition was lacking due to new stuff in stomach not going away. Heat was starting to get to me but that was alright until around 11k when my stomach turned and I coughed up a chewed up gu chomp. Still could not take anything other than water on the aid stations. I felt full. Tried coke but that did not work. Seen Haz going out as I was coming in. We had a chuckle. Cbass looked strong. She seemed to be doing great! Then After the last big hill, I was cramping up hard. Started doing run walk as much as I could for the last 3 k and finished strong. I came into the finishing shute yelling at all the people just watching and not cheering. This seemed to get the crowd going. IS THIS ALL CALGARY HAS!!!! COME ON....LOUDER!!! while waving my hands up and down to get them going! THEN I see her coming into the shute...jumping up and down with this GREAT BIG SMILE....THEN we HI FIVED and I finished....yeah thats right...LISA BENTLEY came out to HI FIVE ME!!!
It was awesome.....BEST RACE FINISH EVER!!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Got my Medal/belt buckle...almost left with out my shirt.
Ate some pizza and felt like puking...bad Idea...grabed some power ade and some water and walked around. Seen Haz racing in...YEah you read it.....I WAS FIRST OVER THE LINE!!!!!(between me and Haz).........number one baby!!!!

thanks for the head start haz!

Event comments:

I rank this way behind the outback events.
I think it will be 50 50 if it keeps going. It stopped alot of traffic.
Great race. Fun bike course.

Congrats on an awesome bike, and a good race overall.  Hilarious about the Gu Chomps and trying new things on race day.  Wasn't it delightful coming down that finishing chute!? I loved it!!! All the best at IMC!

Okay, I read the pre-race and think it must be the best race ever because you got to see Carolyn. How is she?

I still think seeing Carolyn was better than seeing Lisa Bentley, but whatever floats your boat.

It sounds like you'll be read for IMC.

Did you really get a belt buckle? I wouldn't be surprised in Calgary.

CBASS was the hi-lite. I seen her on the run. And the swim.

Thanks everybody.

IT WAS A BELT BUCKLE!!
