Champion  34263     Chicago |  Subject: Breaking News: Triathletes Like to Talk About Being TriathletesSo a few weeks back I asked a coworker through a wiki chat if her husband, a coach in London and a multi-time Ironman, would look at my IM training plan. I asked in the wiki chat instead of e-mailing her because it's just easier that way. One of the other reporters on the chat busted out with `Gee Tony, can you tell us what your training plan entails? Pretty please!? And don't spare ANY details!' I assumed he was being sarcastic because I talk about triathlons with another triathlete and my coworker whose husband is a coach in the wiki chat a lot, and perhaps he was sick of hearing about our triathlonosity. But it got me thinking -- do we talk about our tri prowess too much? Now I'm pretty tame -- I try not to bring it up at parties that `Oh yeah I would've been here sooner but I was doing a 50-50 brick and ran seven at 7T and 3R RPE 7 and then did a 15 CD at RPE 3. Dude my RHR is wayyy high these days.' Instead I just say `I biked and ran. Gimme some whisky.' But still, the old adage: `How do you know a triathlete is in the room? He'll tell you.' is definitely true. Many triathletes with whom I hang at bars won't hesitate to bring it up. In fact, my friend David and I will tell people `This guy's an AWESOME triathlete.' Are we arrogant or do we have a right, because of all the work we put in, to brag about our accomplishments? Or should we just talk about the weather like everybody else? |

So, at least in his opinion, I talk about it more than I should. But then when I am thinking about it.... what is there to talk about in my life? If someone asks, "whatcha been up to?" Well, that's what I've been up to! |

I don't get home till 8:30-9:00 PM most nights. The only day I usually take off from training is Friday. So yeah, if someone asks what I'm up to... I'm up to tri training. |

Otherwise, I don't really bring it up - however, if people ask what I did over the weekend and my answer is "run X number of miles and then swam", they'll ask me why. So, I tell them. Simple. It's more that I feel like I need to explain why anyone would want to work out that much. But I'm not a geeked out tri-person in general, so I don't really have many details to bore them with. |

Once I am asked I can talk forever about it, but try not to bring it up on my own. |

People talk about what they are doing/interested in. That's why at work I listen to people talk about their kids all day long. They all have kids in school, so it's soccer this, baseball that, homework this, daycare that, current disease this and now school supplies and whether Walmart is better than Fred Meyer since it's farther away. For someone not interested/involvedin all that, that sort of conversation is interminably tedious. That's why I make sure to tell them all about my splits, nutrition, and workout schedule all the time. It's revenge, really. Ha! But it's also really nice to be able to talk about all that tri stuff with someone actually interested/knowledgeable. There just needs to be more of us! |

Maybe if I was better at this stupid sport!  It used to just be BT where I talked about it. It was a big step for me just to mention a workout on Facebook on occasion. Sometimes it get a little interesting when I hear people talk about doing one for the first time. I have to restrain myself from offering advice or getting in on the conversation. Many of my friends don't know about me doing trithlon until they saw my pictures on facebook. If ask what I've been up to, or what's the plan for the weekend etc, I'd "same stuff I've been doing, as usual". You think people really are interested in knowing the details of your weekend? Do you really like to listen to the details of your coworker's weekend? |

Most people really don't give a rats tail and it bores them to death. I get bored listening to a guy I run into at the gym talking about tris...I avoid him as much as I can. It's kind of like golf, fishing, boating, etc...it's only interesting most of the time to people active in that sport/hobby. Keep the talking in moderation! |
