Hey everyone, I just signed up for this website today because I was inquiring about a used tri bike, and found that there's resources here that are awesome for training!

I am about 3 weeks into my 8-week training with a goal of completing my first sprint tri at the Patriots Spring Tri in Williamsburg, VA on Sept. 13th. I swam in high school (about 10 years ago!) and am an avid cyclist, so running is my biggest concern. I did, however, participate in the Susan G. Komen 5k in June in Washington, DC, so I have a bit of a base, albeit a shallow one!

Wish me luck! I'm training primarily with my girlfriend who was a swimmer in HS and cross country star in high school and college, so my ego will take quite a hit when she crosses the finish line before me!

Equipment:
I use a 2008 Felt Z90 road bike that I love, 56cm since I'm 5'11". Upgraded to Shimano A530 clipless pedals and use LG Laurentides MTB shoes for training and plan on using Forte Tri shoes for the tri. I also have an 08 Jamis Durango 1.0 MTB that I don't ride on too much now that I'm training (if anyone wants to buy a solid MTB lmk!). Cheapo Schwinn helmet from WalMart protects my beautiful face. Pearl Izuma gloves and trek gloves. speedo goggles. I run in Puma cell and Nike Livestrong running shoes, and have started crosstraining in Vibram FiveFingers (yes, I believed the hype).

Wish me luck! If anyone is is VA and want to train a couple times, holler!

Hi and welcome! Gotta love the cheapo helmets - I have a really ugly Louis Garneau myself. Good luck in your race! I'm sure your running base will be much deeper by the time you get there, especially with all those shoes.

Have fun!

I'm actually work in Harrisonburg but also train around DC/Northern VA. Haven't been to the course yet but I've checked out the route online. From what I hear from my bike club buddies, it's really flat. Around where I am (Shenandoah Valley) you can't go a quarter mile without hitting a 200-foot climb, so I think training around here will be good for me.

Good luck with your international distance, meherczeg, and maybe I'll see you there! Maybe next year I'll try one of those out (based on how these go this season, and if I'll find enough courage to run 6 miles!). And Jenna, yes i have tons of shoes, but it's not because I'm a good runner, I'm just a shopaholic! Since I've gotten into cycling, I've somehow accumulated 4 bikes, with my 5th being a tri bike pretty soon!

Welcome!  I've done the Patriot's tri once and ridden the course a few times.  It is very flat!!  The run course can get a little warm because there's not a lot of shade on the Colonial Parkway.  I do like the course.  Lots of fun!!

the run may not be on the colonial parkway this year.  a boat slammed into the pilings on one of the bridges 2 weeks ago and they have some of that stretch shut down for the repairs, not sure of the timing on it.

Sure hope that the new run course will be a bit more shady.  Set Up hopefully will post the new run course soon.  I'm doing the half on Sat.  I also hope the weather holds up and they don't cancel the Half and the swims for the sprint and OLY. I was really bummed last year that theyHad to make it a DU. I hate the run as well.  I live in the "Burg" and look forward to seeing everyone here for the races.  OH and best of luck, you'll do great and be hooked just like the rest of us CRAZIES!!

Welcome, sounds like you have a nice base to work off of and a GF to help keep you motivated in the area you feel weakest.  I came into this thing about 80lbs. heavier last year and my athletic career (year ago) entailed playing team sports although I used to be a pretty good runner.  Anyway good luck, I'm kicking around doing the race myself.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! It's definitely more and more exciting the closer the sprint tri gets. I do hope they don't cancel any leg, though. I'm ramping up my training, and definitely getting better at long runs.

I'm also in the middle of building a triathlon bike! My girlfriend got me a Felt S22 frame for my birthday, and I'm building it from there. I've built a bike before, but it was a simple fixie, so this should be fun. I have a mechanical engineering background so I just love taking stuff apart and putting them back together! See you all in September, for those of you doing the Patriots...

they only cancelled the swim because a tropical storm came through the days before and the water was full of debris.  right now the water is warm and "clean"

i say that because it is normally pretty icky

for thoose of you who have articipated in this event in this past, and/oor the giant acorn at lake anna, is a wetsuit a good thing to have, or are the temps in september and october mild enough? and how smoothly does a T1 transistion go with a wetsuit to deal with? im practicing my transitions, particularly the T1, to help with my time and I wonder how these things go.

No need for a wetsuit for Patriot.  Lake Anna may not want one for Acorn, I did Bumpass in April and it was 60 degrees. Water is slower to cool than heat though and the swim is close to the reactor side of the lake and thus a bit warmer.

Pfadal, welcome fellow newbie!  I finished my first sprint (Steelman in PA) two weeks ago and went into it with a strained hamstring and level 2 seperated shoulder (that's a bad thing)... and I absolutely love the sport!  My best suggestion is to practice T2.  I had a good swim time, did great with T1, had a great bike time, but was not prepared for the T2 transition... and the hamstring was screaming at me to say the least.  I'm now reading ChiRunning and other stuff on running mechanics because running is how I strained my hamstring.

We should try to do some training together.  I was thinking of joining the DCTRI club because I'm up their often.... it's part of my sales territory.  Let me know  Oh yeah, and I just bought a 2008FELT S32 - great bike... I got a mtbike for sale as well.  haha

Good luck at Patriot... I might see you there

Thanks for the tip, QueenZipp! That's $200 less I'll need to spend...

fnnvrstps, congrats on your first sprint! sorry to hear about  your injuries. I have problems with my right calf always cramping. The second day of swim training I was just coming off the turn after 1375m, and my push-off off the wall caused my right calf to cramp! I couldn't move for about 10 minutes! It was one of those cramps where it looks like there's a huge dent in your calf! And yesterday, biked 2.5 mi to the pool, swam 1400m, biked back, and ran for about 2 miles. That same calf almost tightened up! I had to take a break to stretch it real quick. I thought I've been consuming enough water, etc.  My nutrition could be better. I wish I wasn't so addicted and dependent on so much coffee every day (work is a drag!).

I also ended up getting a 2007 Felt S22 tri frame! I have spent so much money for this tri, I better finish! I love the frame. I haven't built it up yet (still waiting on parts) but you can check out my opinions on the frame, and the components I plan on putting on it, in the Gear Reviews section. Thanks again everyone for the help. Forums are awesome...

Welcome, I live in Staunton and work in Fort Defiance.
I will be doing the Patriots Sprint as well, and wearing a Home made BT Tattoo (and at the BOP as well).
Some of the people I train with at the Y are going to be there and some others from the area as well.
Everyone that I have met so far are really great people and will give you all sorts of advice and support.
BTW there is a quarry not to far away that some of us go to for OWS

The quarry would be a nightmare to practice any transition. You will see when you get there.
