I wear a 9 wide shoe (in mens), and by sheer luck, I managed to find a pair of older (but unused) road cycling shoes at my LBS that fit. I was wondering what brands have good sizes and where to find them.

I did a quick google search, and I found Lake shoes, but some of them are EXPENSIVE, and I really would like to try them on first before purchasing (or if an internet site has a great return policy).

I run with 9 1/2 extra wide shoes and the LG regular tri shoes fits me fine so you may want to have a look at them.

I have those but last years model:

I've been riding with a new pair of Lake 211 Wide shoes. They are as wide as my Sidi Genius Mega 5 road shoes and cost half the price. I'm a newbie and so haven't done a Tri yet, but they seem to have the desired features:  barefoot comfort, single main arch strap (and small toe strap), good drainage and ventilation.

Northwave cycling shoes also run a bit wider...particularly in the toe box.  Their "tri" version is called the "Tribal".  Might be able to find some deals if you do an online search.

I really like the Nortwave shoes. The only problem for me is that the Tribal doesn't come in half sizes. I need a 44.5. Lake seemed to fit well, but the cx -211 had too much flex for me. I've settled on Nortwave road shoes, but still wish they would come out with half sizes in the tribal.
