Overall Rank = 36/149

Age Group Rank = 1/6
Pre-race routine:

Woke at 3:30, coffee, bagels, and honey. Showered, shaved, dressed, then drove the 45 minutes to the race site. Got there about 5:30 to help set up the racks and barricades, got a prime rack position for helping!
Event warmup:

No warmup. Helped Angel with transition, then moved on down to the water when it was time.
Swim
  • 15m 19s
  • 656 yards
  • 02m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

Typical sucky swim for me, includes quarter-mile run uphill to the timing mats at the entrance to transition.

Not as bad as last week, navigation was much better, as was breathing.
What would you do differently?:

Train, spend more time in the pool
Transition 1
  • 00m 25s
Comments:

Once I got to transition I didn't waste any time. Fastest T1 time in race!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Helmet on, grab the bike and go. Simple stuff.
Bike
  • 46m 36s
  • 17.5 miles
  • 22.53 mile/hr
Comments:

A little trouble getting into shoes, but not much time lost.

First section going south was the worst piece of road on the course, jut had to grin and bear it. Passed a lot of people over the first four miles, lots of them were riding on the left. Averaging about 22.8 when I got to Bull Island Road, had visions of getting the average over 23 but the road wouldn't let me. BI Road is close to chip-seal, very rough, offers a alot more resistance to the tires. Hard to hold 22 mph over the 2-1/2 miles. By the time I got to the end, my hands were tingling like they do when you finish mowing the lawn with the push mower.

Finally got to Norris, then to Jeffferson Island Road for the final stretch. Back up over 24mph. Passed Rusty as we neared the RVW entrance, he was doing the bike as part of a relay team. No problem getting out of shoes and into transition.
What would you do differently?:

Ride different roads. Not bad, Top 8 bike split.
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Miss on the first attempt to rack the bike, also fumbled with getting on the Zoots.
What would you do differently?:

Wasn't perfect but not bad, may want to practice with th Zoots but my feel is they aren't the perfect transition running shoe, too high in the back, too small of an opening. Maybe I'll go back to a regular running shoe with Spped Laces.
Run
  • 20m 39s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 08m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Just like last week, coming off the bike the heat is unbearable. Running definitely isn't back to where it was earlier this year before my injury time-out, heat tolerance is nowhere near where it should be. Probably got passed by a dozen or so participants, including Rusty's 10-year-old boy, who was doing their run leg.

Anyway, suffered through it as fast as I could, until it was mercifully over.
What would you do differently?:

Get the training volume back up without aggravating the achilles.
Post race
Warm down:

Pant, pant, wheeze, wheeze, drink a couple gatorades.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Can't swim, bad roads, lack of run volume and heat tolerance. Transitons were good, though!

Just an additional note on those transition. The guy behind me in my AG beat me on the swim and run, and on the three main disciplines would have beat me by 1:12. But I had great transitions, including the fastest T1 in the race, beat his transition times by 1:42 and won the AG by 30 seconds.

Just hope he doesn't catch on!

Event comments:

Good race at a nice venue.

Great race report.  I did it as well.  My first RVW.  Great place for a tri.  Did you have a colorful tri top?  If so you caught me right at the end of the bike before coming into transition.  You were cooking on the bike!  I started in the first wave.

Congrats!

Great race. Smoking fast bike split and T1. You were the only one with a faster T1 than me. I was on the 3rd rack in the center.

Nice to meet you and mama bear. I held a quick conversation with her druing my T2.

See you guys in a few weeks at the Snake Bite Tri in Morgan City.
