Member 51 Vero Beach, FL | Subject: RE: Siesta Key Triathlon : Official Thread http://www.siestakeytriathlon.org/ Did this race last year as my comeback to triathlons. They really put on a great race and you can't beat the location. Not sure yet if I'm doing it this year due to having some longer races both the week before and the week after. If you're looking for a great sprint race, this is it. |

Champion 7036 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: Siesta Key Triathlon : Official Thread Turnin2 - 2009-08-13 9:45 AM The run description is a 5K beach run on packed sand. How hard packed is it? Does everyone wear shoes or is it where the water comes up on the beach? Depends on whether it's low or high tide. The run course is along the water's edge. At low tide there's a nice strip of damp, packed sand; at high tide it's softer and more difficult to run on. You'll probably get your shoes a bit wet & grungy running along the water, especially on the outbound leg. Take note if you run sockless, you're certain to get some sand in your shoes. I've never seen anyone run barefoot - while most of the run is on the beach, the transition area and the finish chute are in the beach parking lot area. For me the toughest part of the race is the approximately 100 yd run from the water to T1 through the soft sand. Mark

I also hear that you get out of the water during the swim? My buddy wants to do duathlon so I said Id come over and do the tri. |

Veteran 253 Sarasota FL | Subject: RE: Siesta Key Triathlon : Official Thread Get out of the water? I don't think so, it's an up and back type of swim, around a narrow rectangle of buoys. And really, running on the sand by the water isn't too bad at all. |

There is another race called escape to Siesta Key on Sept 12. Which race are we talking about? We're talking about the October race, put on by the YMCA for the benefit of their Sharks youth swim team for the past 20 some years. The Sept. race is put on by a local for-profit race promoter, who I have nothing good to say about. Mark |

It doesn't show an "m" Interesting the race director told you different. Official info for the race: http://www.siestakeytriathlon.org/info.html steve |

What problems have you encountered/heard of that might be a reason to skip it? Thanks, steve I both raced and volunteered at some of his previous events. He is scrimping on the timing system to save money. They hand time at the finish line, so no splits. He even says to "bring your own watch" if you want splits. The promoter is is encouraging people to enter this race so that HE can use the proceeds to purchase a timing system that he will in turn rent at 'discount' rates back to the local tri club for races. That whole concept doesn't set well with me. I guess I'd rather support events that support a worthy cause than one designed to line somebody's pocket. In the past he has had an inadequate number of volunteers to properly cover the course. He's had a history of cancelling events at the last minute when he couldn't get all the required permits in time, or he didn't have enough entries. Some other stuff that I won't go into here. Mark

I've had similar experience with this RD. Very unorganized. Had a trail run 10k and 1/2 mary last year where the couse was not properly marked in a 100 acre preserve. I think some ran 3 miles others ran 16 miles. It was a mess. His website is horrible as well. |

Expert 1191 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: Siesta Key Triathlon : Official Thread Hey Folks, I'm not doing the upcoming Sieta Key Tri but I did do the Escape to Siesta Tri a couple weekends ago. I'm not certain where they will be setting up the transition area for the upcoming event but if it is in the same area (just in front of the bathrooms on the left side of the parking lot - near the tennis courts) watch out for fire ants. While setting up they lit me up from knees to toes. I wasn't the only one - they got alot of people. It was dark, the area was flooded, I didn't know it was happening until the damage was done. Beware if it's dark. |

Yes, it was in the "grassy" area next to the bathrooms on the left hand side of your pciture. I hope the gulf is calmer as well. We had 4 ft. swells with rip currents for the Escape to Siesta. They had to cut the swim in half because of the conditions. Took me 12 minutes to swim 200 meters (I swam 400 meters in the pool the day before in 7:05). Good luck. |
