Schwingding - 2005-05-12 2:50 PM Well, 2.4 divided by 4, thats a .6 mile swim. 112 divided by 4 , thats a 28 mile bike, 26.2 divided by 4, 6.5. It is somewhere in between a sprint and an olympic. The race director should be ashamed of himself for putting the word "iron" anywhere in the title. I would find it embarrassing to name a race thusly. A 1/2 doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of what an ironman is, but the run will make you wonder what you were thinking when you signed up for double the distance. Please don't take this to be personal, I tried to say that up front, I just think its a sham, and a shame, to name a race like that.

So it is also wrong to describe a 13.1 mile road race a half marathon? IMO it is just a way to represent-describe the distance of the race that's all. Nothing to do with the Ironman "AURA". I plan to do an IM distance event next year to accomplish a personal goal, not to be related to the IM trade mark. By the way I am also doing a 1/4 IM and a 1/2 IM this year and I call myself a Triathlete...

...I had a date with a 25 yr old last week (woohoo!). He poo-poo'd the 5k run, said he could sprint a 5k. I'm sure he could. So, I asked him to join me for a triathlon and, oh yeah, I'm going to run a marathon in February - wanna do that too? He declined. Something about his back... blah blah blah. KnowwhutImean?

Brings to mind the song:

Oh they want me to rock them
Like their back ain't got no bone
You need a man whose gonna rock you
Like your backbone was his own

I'd let him go. What good is a 25 yr old with a bad back?

Sometimes I do wonder how in heavens have we come this far.... Anal triathlete is a good term for people that just bla bla bla bla.. A real triathlete is someone that does triathlons regardless of the distance and name and just enjoys them for the health of it. Who gives us the right to criticize the name of the race based on our "superior" knowledge. A race is a race, a triathlon is a triathlon not matter how you call it... if you are swimming, biking and running... hell you are a Triathlete.

I am one.... and being a brain tumor survivor,  the fact that I can do these thing just brings me joy...  Just swim, bike and run....and avoid the bla bla bla bla....   it is good for the soul !!!!

Cheers

Wow, just wow. Shwingding, a new member, made a valid point with respect to a race name, and another new member starts with the name calling? Weird. Must be over-training or something.

I think Kim summarized it very nicely; wordy mcword to her entire post.

Are you serious? I stand by my spaz comment. Doesnt mean someones a bad person. I know many people who are a bit spazish. I would hardly call it name calling.

tom, I'm completely serious. Is your race distance a .6ms/28mb/6.5mr? Or is it an Oly? If it is the former, then it is probably best referred to as an international distance since I believe that is the correct USAT terminology. Nobody has faulted you for entering a race you didn't name.

We have lots of people on BT with strong opinions, *cough* Bear *cough* and while I may not agree with everything posted, I usually learn from them and enjoy reading a fresh perspective about our sport.

Enough of the hijack, Kim's post rocked.

yes that's the distance and it is called "1/4 iron distance" Don't know if Tom is doing the same race (is in the same day) as I am but here is the website: http://www.timbermantri.com/mooseman.html

IMHO, I think there are way too many people that make IM races out to be something that it's not. It's just a race...Nothing more, nothing less.
Let it go. Enjoy your races

lynda - 2005-05-12 5:56 PMtom, then it is probably best referred to as an international distance since I believe that is the correct USAT terminology.

USAT actually uses the term Olympic in it's FAQ to describe a race of comprising a 9-mile swim, 24.8-mile bike and 6.2-mile run. The rules don't use the terms Sprint, Olympic, International or Iron.

According to the rules Triathlons are grouped into Distance Categories by the bike length:
Short/Intermediate Cycle course less than 50k
Long Cycle course 50k-100k
Ultra Cycle course greater than 100k

Yes Amiine. That’s the one. Good luck man. Im sleeping in a tent on Fri, hope I get a good night sleep. Anyways just so you know the name has officially changed to “The Mooseman - It is somewhere in between a sprint and an olympic. The race director should be ashamed of himself for putting the word "iron" anywhere in the title- Triathalon”.

Schwingding can now rest easy.

This question pops up about 2-3 times a year.  What does it really matter?  Does anyone go around advertising themselves as a "triathlete"?  In 99% of the cases, I would guess not.

Personally, I do this stuff for my mental and physical health, for fun, to meet others who do it, and to match my training up against others in my age group.  I don't do it so I can make myself feel important at cocktail parties.  It begins to erode the true joy out of this pursuit for me.  It makes me sound like I'm there, like I've made it.  The fact is, I have not "made it" and never will.  I will forever be one who "trains for triathlons".  Its a journey, not a destination.

All of us on this forum train for triathlons, we love to run, bike and swim (in varying degrees, of course).  This is a great community.  We're getting healthier.  We're testing our own limits.  That is enough for me.

I've been thinking about that lately...
I've done a marathon but I do not consider myself a marathoner. I do not even consider myself a runner (I am not passionate about that).
I haven't done a triathlon yet.... very soon. I've been training for 4 months.
I guess I cannot picture myself as an athlete, period. We have the idea that athletes are these incredible fit people that finish races on the top 25.
I think that I will consider myself a triathlete next season. If I am doing this for over a year and I still have the passion I have now, then I'll know...

I agree with the sentiments expressed by Motivated too, couldn't say it any better.

However, there are lots of different ways to get in shape and stay that way. I tri because I can. I've been a swimmer my entire life, almost as long on a bicycle and ran track though high school, so triathlon seems pretty natural to me (although I can't say I "enjoy" running... almost). The truth is though, in choosing this sport, we are saying something to those around us and everyone of us is proud of our accomplishments and I suspect that we like the admiration of the non-triathletes in our lives. I don't flaunt it and I wash my race numbers off my body in the first shower after the competition, but if someone wants to know what I've been up to or how I've lost 25 lbs., I do not hesitate to share my experiences with them.

Most of us work very hard at training for tri's. When I'm in a race, I'm certainly a triathlete. I say you can call yourself whatever you wish, but our dedication to fitness and friendly competition is more impressive than labels.

Well, I gotta say I am lovin' the mileage I get out of saying I train 6xweek for tri. Being new to the dating scene, I notice guys want to know if I'm "fit" - euphemism for... whatever. Everybody on the online dating sight calls themselves fit or athletic, whatever. I call myself "a few pounds extra." Cuz I do. Anyhoo... when I am asked about my "fitness" I simply say I train 6xweek for tri, that I just started in February. Suddenly I'm some kind of goddess. Guys start saying "Oh, well I need to lose a few pounds blah blah blah." Whatever. As I said, it gets me mileage but what I'm most interested in hearing is what ideas come out of their mouth, not how many hours they spend in the gym. The reverse does not seem to be true. Sometimes I want to say "And I have all my teeth!" Even the 25 yr old was impressed with my tri training. He felt the need to explain that he could sprint a 5k, swim 2000 yards, etc, etc. If I'm going to be judged by my level of "fitness" and a guy wants to assume positive things because I am disciplined with my training... I'm not going to complain. Not only does it get my foot in the door (as we say in recruiting land), suddenly I've got fitness capital (to borrow from the POTUS).

I am with you!
I am getting so much respect for doing this!
When I was training for a marathon everyone said I was crazy.
Now I am a respected "crazy" member of society. I've even been called "an inspiration!
Wow.....
