Tuscaloosa, Alabama
United States
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 03m 27s
Overall Rank = 774/924
Age Group = F40-44
Age Group Rank = 37/49
Pre-race routine:

Coffee, water & 1/2 bagel (normally have oatmeal but hotel made that difficult).
Event warmup:

None, just walking around waiting for our late wave to start.
Swim
  • 47m 19s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Very difficult swim, especially if you were not prepared to swim against the current. As my friend put it "I'm not a salmon, I don't swim up river!"
What would you do differently?:

Be more prepared and stronger in the water. There were lots of people passing me, and when they passed they were gone, so it is possible to swim fast up river.
Transition 1
  • 02m 41s
Comments:

Slow, but we had a fairly long to the bikes. I'm just slow, even skipped putting on a shirt this time and I was still slow. I'm blaming it on the Garmin, takes too long to put that stupid thing on. And my bike shoes are not tri friendly, and I'm not that coordinated putting them on.
What would you do differently?:

Convince husband that I need the new Garmin 310 and better shoes that are easier to put on.
Bike
  • 1h 14m 7s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.12 mile/hr
Comments:

More hilly than I expected. Felt ill prepared for this course, and we had to do it twice. I realize the field was tough, but I am not used to being passed by women, so that was hard for me. I did a little passing, but not much.
What would you do differently?:

Train more, work on hills, talk husband into better wheels.
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

Slow again...
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions.
Run
  • 57m 47s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

Was mentally done with the race by the time I started the run. The bike really wore me out, as did the swim. I just did what I could, walked the hills, ran the flats.
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Post race
Warm down:

Stood in the finish tent dazed and confused for first 10 minutes. Felt really dehydrated so I sucked down the huge bottle of water they gave us.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training, equipment, mental state of mind.

Event comments:

I can't really blame the race for my performance, there were lots of people that did well. I was just out of my league, but I knew that going in, so I am glad I went. We got really cool swag, and I learned that I need to work harder!

Good job, Karen.  That was the toughest Oly I have ever done ...who ever heard of a race where you have to swim uphill?  That said, it was Nationals and therefore should have been tough.

Good job in rising to the occasion to complete the impossible swim!
