Pre-race routine:

I went camping. Had to setup at night in the rain, Friday night. Saturday was eating and getting everything ready. Had some time to relax hang out with Acumenjay at the dinner and for Smores.

Woke up Sunday morning early, feeling great. No caffeine. I had packed up all my stuff the night before. Walked about 1mi to the shuttle buses at Gunstock. Got right on a bus and headed to Ellacoya for the race.

Hit up the bathrooms a few times, stood around way too long.
Event warmup:

Ate. Hung out, swam around a bit with Acumenjay. Big thing here vs RI70.3 was eating.
Swim
  • 37m 36s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

I thought my swim was much better. Got caught up at the beginning at towards the middle. Then found feet and drafted some. Honestly, I thought this would have been about 5min faster. At the same time, I feel like I used no energy coming out of the water.

One punch to the head, some foot grabbing, some bumping. After I got free in the middle, I passed quite a few people.
What would you do differently?:

Swim harder. Be more aggressive at the start. Swim harder.
Transition 1
  • 02m 52s
Comments:

Long transition. I was near the back corner near the run exit, but up a few rows. Long run out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, for where I was placed, it was faster.
Bike
  • 2h 19m 50s
  • 48.3 miles
  • 20.72 mile/hr
Comments:

I may have pushed the bike too hard, but no idea since, I did not finish.

So my crash. I was coming down a hill (Mobile on the right, some bank on the left), there were cones at the bottom, I was slowing down and starting to turn. All of the sudden it felt like I was no longer turning. So I went to turn, and next thing I know it felt like the front of my bike exploded.

I did not black out, I remember going over the handlebars, with my bike flipping over me. There was a brief moment where I was like f'me. Landed. I got up and yelled that I crashed and I thought I was hurt. I laid down. Not sure if I got my bike and parts off the course or someone else did.

There was a Police Officer and two volunteers. One of the volunteers was a nurse. I could not move my left arm/shoulder much. I was coherent. EMTs came, checked me out, nothing broken.

I got cleaned up, still hurting, but I kept gaining more movement in my left arm.

Still not positive what happened except that I sheared my handle bars off, the steering tube broke in the handlebars. Landed on my head, which was both a good thing and bad. Good in that if I had landed on my side I probably would have broken something or had much worse road rash. I cracked my helmet in a few places on the inside. It saved my life for sure.

EMTs asked if I wanted to go to the hospital. Declined. Sat around for what felt like forever waiting for a ride back from the sag wagon. Eventually got picked up, and rode back with people that had had various issues and had stopped their races. I asked if I could still run.

I was told that I would have to turn my timing chip in first and that I could then go out and run if I felt up to it.

Up to the crash, I felt great on the bike. The big thing was fluid/food intake. I had had two bottles of Gatorade, 1 of water, 4-5gels. Way more than what I took in at RI70.3.
What would you do differently?:

Not crash?
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

My T2 was sitting on the side of the road for what seemed like hours. Then getting a ride back into Ellacoya, walking my new 3-piece bike into transition, talking to the Pros, then talking my time to change shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing?
Run
  • 1h 41m 30s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

Great run, but I had a long time to recover after biking. Started with a headache. It faded just past the turn around on the first loop.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure Garmin was ready.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, got into the lake. Ate food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Crashing. I think this race really suits me well.

Event comments:

Basically a perfectly run race. Apparently the shuttle buses back to Gunstock after the race had long wait times. I could not find the massage area. I would prefer if the race was on Saturday. Outside of that not much could be improved upon. At this point I plan on coming back next year.

Thanks for the comments. I got to hang out with Chrissie Wellington and Bjorn Andersson when I walked in with my bike. Two other pros that I did not know. They certainly gave me motivation. No way I would have ran as fast if I had come in straight off the bike.

Really sorry to hear about your crash but great news that you didn't break anything (other than your bike). Really impressive that you completed the run and in such a good time, not sure I would have made it out after such a big crash.

Aaron first and foremost -- glad you're okay, KONA IS ALIVE AND WELL!!!

Secondly, it sounds like it may have been some sort of manuf defect on the bike stem.  Perhaps may be something to look into.  But whatever, you're okay.  You can replace bike parts much easier than body parts

Rock on and get ready for KONA!!!

Aaron,
Dude that really sucks about the crash.  It is amazing that you were not hurt.  I know the approach in to some of the turns were steep and fast.  Glad that you are OK.  It really is impressive that you went for the run and hammered it out anyway.  It shows great determination that is sure to push you through to Kona.

At least you can fix/replace the bike and your body did not get damaged (too bad).

Rock on....

Mark

So sorry to hear about your crash, but way to be tough and go through with the run. I know you said you didn't have the whole bike leg done so that contributed to your speedy time in the run, but still, after enduring a crash, what stamina and heart. Nice work, much respect! Looking forward to hearing about Kona. And awesome you got to chill with Chrissie and co.. I hear she's great and down to earth.
