Subject: Bike Angels for Oct 4 Atlanta 13.1 race

Hi Gang -

One of the guys (Butch Wade) who organized the bike escorts for the wheelchair racers at the ING marathon last year is looking for escorts for the inaugural Atlanta 13.1 race on October 4.  The escorts will lead the top 3 male and female runners and then go back to escort the remaining runners to the finish.

Here is a copy of the email.  If interested, pmail me and I'll give you Butch's contact information:

I am working with Danielle Puckerman with US Road Sports to coordinate a small group of cyclists to support the runners of Atlanta's inaugural 13.1 Atlanta on October 4th. At this point, I am looing for 8 additional cyclists to help with this event.  This will be first come - first served based on your registration date/time stamp.

Date:       Sunday, October 4.
Time:       6 am to 11 am  - possibly longer
Where:    Start and Finish at Ogelthorpe University Campus
Distance: 13.1 miles

"13.1 Marathon™ is the Inaugural series of themed half marathons serving some of America's top running communities with a stand-alone half marathon for locals to embrace and visitors to experience.  Where the Party meets the Pavement!"

We will have 3 riders to lead and support the top 3 males and 3 for the top 3 females.   Ideally, it would be great to have female riders providing the support for the top 3 female runners.   The other four will support the runners at the back of the pack.  Once the lead 6 riders have supported and identified the leading male and female runners over the finish line, they will then drop to the back to help with support to bring the last runners in - much like the group of bike angels group for the ING.

Some of you may have done Bike Angel duties with ING Marathon the past couple of years and some of our duties will be similar to those as we escort the runners at the back of the pack and provide support and encouragement to them in this event.

Because we are supporting runners, we will need to moderate our pace differently than supporting elite wheel chair racers.

I have included the registration link and the info on the event.

There are three attachments included with this email.
  1. Instructions on how to register - the link to registration is included in the instructions page.
  2. Street listing of the turn by turn course route with distances
  3. General Map of the course
Jett Marks has also created a map in Bikely.com that will be shared once we have our group of volunteers.

I plan to schedule two practice "runs" on the course like we did for the ING Marathon. More to come on that but would suspect those will be the weekends prior to the race on October 4th.

Looking forward to riding with many of you soon.
