Setup Events
Total Time = 53m 5s
Overall Rank = 96/440
Age Group = 40 - 44
Age Group Rank = 13/42
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:30. Ate a banana, some walnuts, and a lara bar. Coffee! Rode bike about 2.3 miles from where I stayed to the event site.
Event warmup:

Jogged a little and did stretches.
Swim
  • 07m 56s
  • 273 yards
  • 02m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water was chilly but not bad. I started back and left. Our route went clockwise. I kept pulling left which veered me much too wide around the bouys adding time/distance. Had a difficult time getting a front crawl pace because of the crowding and was distracted by having to keep looking for the bouys to my right.
What would you do differently?:

Start further to the right rather than left. More open water and sighting practice.
Transition 1
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Wiped feet on towel as I grabbed helmet and put it on. Slipped on shoes (which now have elestic laces!), no socks. Put on race belt and sunglssses. Took off.
What would you do differently?:

Wait to put on run belt during second transition so that I can put it on while running.
Bike
  • 25m 35s
  • 7 miles
  • 16.52 mile/hr
Comments:

Used Raleigh hybrid. Don't think I could have done much better.
What would you do differently?:

Buy a road bike!
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

Fumbled with the helmet latch after I racked the bike. I should have popped the helmet latch while running into transition.
What would you do differently?:

Unlatch helmet prior to racking bike.
Run
  • 17m 1s
  • 2 miles
  • 08m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good off the bike. No socks was fine. Passed a LOT of people on the run... wish I had counted.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked it off.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just need more training.

Event comments:

Great short race. Good first open water experience. This race seemed to draw a very diverse ability level.

16+ on a mountain bike is pretty darn fast.  Wait until you get a road or tri bike you are going to be flying.  Swim time was pretty good too considering it was your first OW and you said you veered off course a little.

Good job!

Don't get too hung up on the bike issue, and in some races, you must have the helmet on and buckled if you're holding your bike, so leaving it on and buckled is OK.
