Master  2701    Salisbury, North Carolina |  Subject: A crazy thought...........Many of you know about the Assault on Mt Mitchell ride and I'm sure some of you have heard about the Brasstown Bald Century in Ga. This year the rides were on the same long weekend, BB on Sat May 16 and AOMM on Mon May 18. That got me thinking...... wonder if anyone has done both of these on the same weekend ? (Maybe they haven't even been scheduled together until now, who knows). It may border on insanity but I'm considering "The Long Weekend"...... 206 miles/26,000+ ft of climbing with a day of "rest" in between. I imagine we could get a few people interested, do a few rides together, do A LOT of training obviously, and ride the rides. Make a few friends along the way and accomplish a seriously difficult goal. This could be cool...... here's the link to a thread I started in the Ga. Sometimes I wish I was male and 25 so I could try to make a living riding my bike, lol! I knew we had some playas here...... Deadline to join the Freewheelers is Dec. 31. The Freewheelers of Spartanburg ( S.C.) put on the Assault on Mt Mitchell (AOMM). This is $20/25 and gives you first priority to sign up... you're guaranteed entry basically, which is another $ 85 or so. But, you can sell your entry # if you can't ride for some reason, and there were a LOT of entries being sold the last month or so before the race. The registration is in Feb., race in May. Brasstown Bald Century..... don't know when signup is, but looking at past results it looks like only 75-100 ride this...... OUCH. I'll check on this and see. As I mentioned before, I don't know if both events are on the same weekend as this year..... but I've contacted both events to try to find out finalized dates. The 35th Assault on Mt Mitchell will be on on Monday May 17, 2010. http://www.freewheelers.info/aomm/....pretty cool pic from the parking lot. Depending on how clear it is, there are some stunning views from up there. Haven't seen a finalization for Brasstown yet. Still thinking long and hard about this....................lol, first thought I have is Saturday night driving towards Spartanburg knowing I have to ride up ANOTHER FREAKIN MTN in a day and a half........ but that's the "fun" of it. Two centuries with a day in between doesn't bother me much. But when one century is at least one of the more difficult rides in the southeast and the other is to the tallest peak east of the Mississippi.... that is pretty serious. So far we have a couple on here interested and I have a riding buddy who did the Assault this year with me who's interested. Would like to hear from anyone else who is interested in The Long Weekend. |

Brasstown is still May 15. I don't know if this is still a go or not (the double). I would rather have them both together, but maybe it's a blessing....... and, oh.....I might wanna start riding a little...lol. What say you ? |

Master 1741 Chapel Hill, NC | Subject: RE: A crazy thought........... I decided not to do this because I would probably need to take too many days off work to do a weekday race. And I'm only going to get 2 weeks vacation in my new job if it goes permanent. I am doing Warrior Dash instead on May 22. Blood Sweat and Gears or some other mountain century still interests me, in April or June. |
