I've read it a hundred times here so I decided to go run focused for awhile to see if I can get some speed.  I'm a slooooowwwww runner and probably always will be on the slower side but I know I can be faster than I am.  I've been truly run focused for about 4 weeks running 3-4 days a week (previously I was really only doing 1-2 days per week).  When I was released to start working out again the first week of August I did a 13:45 minute mile (don't laugh too hard I told you I was slow!).  Today I completed a 5k at an 11:45 minute pace just 7 weeks later and I was not the last of the runners coming in.

I started as a snail and now am a turtle pace wise but you know, I'm doing it.  And I'm looking forward to seeing where I'm at in another few months as I continue on this run focused schedule in an attempt at bettering next seasons tri performance.  And I wanted to show people that the theory of running more miles to run faster really does work.

So, thank you to all of you who take the time to re-post this old adage every time someone posts the question (which I didn't but I do read and learn).  I know some of you get annoyed every time the question is asked but the advice really is helpful and much appreciated.

Congratulations on your success!  I stuggle with the running also and know how much work it is to improve one's speed. Good for you for sticking with it. Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Great job!

I find if I run 30+ mpw I get faster, below not so much.

Winter of '08 I did 5K every 3 weeks to learn how to suffer and push myself. I dropped my 5K time almost 3 minutes in two months I did it...haven't gotten back to that pace but hope to by next summer.

I'm looking forward to no races so I can run more. I had thought of finding a Mary to train for this winter to help with the run more idea but instead am just going to run more to get better without pressure of a race.

Thank you both.

Kath2163 I think our avatars might have been taken at the same place, I always do a double take when I see your posts!

KathyG, hearing from you means so much to me as you are definitely one of my role models here!  I can't imagine being at 30 mpw but maybe one day!  Obviously 3-7 mpw isn't enough to increase speed so my goal for this winter is to increase to about 20 mpw.  Of course the limiter is my ski habit.  I spend 30-40 days per winter on the mountain which makes getting the runs in a little challenging.

Very cool!  I'm a slow runner but despite being so slow, I was just blown away that I actually ran 6 miles in my first tri.  I have played football, wrestled, and did throwing events in track but I have always avoided running as much as possible.  Just hitting the distance was an awesome feeling.

In my OLY, I only ran low 11 min miles.  After the excitement died down and I reflected on the performance I realized that I paced myself so slowly that I left a lot in the bag.  Tonight I had my son ride his bike with me on a 5 mile run and I pushed a little harder to see if I could handle it.  I did 5 miles at a 9:59 pace and felt great.  I'm getting excited about it because next Saturday will be my first sprint.  I feel really good about going nuts and trying to see if I can get closer to MOP.

Is it me or are the 1st two avatars in this thread strangely similar?

COSkiGirl, I believe that our pics were both taken at the Danskin tri.  the photographer was in a great place and took great shots at that angle.

Cardenas1 you are right, the pics are very similar.

You are correct Kath!  He was at a great spot.  I was negotiating around a much slower rider as I approached him so I was really happy that he got me alone in the shot.  I actually bought the digital image.  Prints should be here any day as a matter of fact!
