I don't think that I would ever get inked, but that has been a hard decision.  In fact, I was going to do it, but decided against it because my wife was opposed.  Which is ok, I was on the fence anyway.

If I did, it would be the M-dot or my kid's names (if I ever have them).

So here is the question.  I have completed a NON M-dot full distance triathlon (Silverman full).  Am I entitled to the M-dot tattoo or not?  Is the M-dot now a trademard that represents all full distance triathlons (like xerox or cleanex)?  Or should it be restricted to only doing M-dot races?

Interested in the responses.

I would think it applies to all.... IM distance races.  Not just M-dot events.

I wouldn't risk it. The tattoo artist will look at your photo ID, pull up your race results there in the studio, and verify that it was, in fact, and M-dot branded race that you did. M-dot tattoos are so popular that there is now training and certification for tattoo artists to do this. You could go to a non-certified tattoo artist, but the "M" may be skinnier or wider than the official logo, and the "dot" all lumpy to try to get around trademark infringement. Anyways, you'll be told to leave and come back when you've done an official M-dot race. In the meantime, you are entitled to a Winnie-the-Pooh on your ankle.

i think if you do the distance you can do the m-dot.

i am about to do Augusta and if i finish i will get a small one on my foot just below the ankle (my third and last tatoo). i like tattoos that are more artwork (symbolic) than text and actually have meaning unlike a tribal arm band or butterfly. mine are also small and in odd places that allow me to hide them and maintain a professional look.

if you felt odd about the m-dot, i guess you could always do a 70.3/ 140.6 tattoo.

No one is "entitled" to anything when it comes to recreational sports ........ if you want it, get it.

X2. It's a corporate logo. If you want it inked on yourself, knock yourself out. Whether or not you did a branded race or even completed the distance.

The logo represents 140.6 miles. Not WHO put on the race. 140.6 is 140.6.

You can get whatever you want, but my personal opinion is that I wouldn't do it.  The analogy that I'd make is motorcycles -
Harley-Davidson's bar and shield logo is an extremely popular tattoo, but sporting one when you ride another brand of American V-twin motorcyle, or god-forbid, a metric cruiser, is kind of un-cool.  However, getting a cool motorcycle tattoo without the Harley logo can be a cool tattoo in it's own right, and it is still immediately recognizable to other motorcyclists that you're a rider too.

Get `140.6' instead. Or the Silverman logo with `140.6' under it ...

If that's legal.

Isn't Silverman supposed to be the hardest race anyway?  I'd get something more showing that.

I agree with the others who said "you can put what you want on " but to me, the silverman logo with a 140.6 just above it would be so much cooler, and less common

I agree that you can get what you want, but I would not get the M Dot.  I am doing FL and IF I decide to get ink (which is not likely b/c I would end up getting it somewhere no one would ever be able to see), I would get a swim, bike, run tat with 140.6 on it.

I vote for the "140.6". If I ever finish that distance, that will be my one and only tat.

x2.  if I decide to get one it will be 140.6 with maybe some tri art.  I wouldn't do a corporate logo.

You did the distance get the Tat if you want. Doesnt matter who put on the race. As far as being over done I dont agree. Most people that do tri never mind the general public could or would ever do the distance. I know I always have a feeling of repect for anyone I see sporting an Mdot. If i ever get the balls to try a full and finish I would consider getting one. As far as getting one for a 70.3 race I think that takes away from it. Im doing Augusta also as my first HIM. Ill be proud as hell when I finish. I wont however consider myself an "Ironman".

I think the ones where there is a swim/bike/run type tat are very cool... you could get the 140.6 somewhere on it.. then it shows IMHO that you are more of a tri person than the M-dot one and done..

If or when I get a M-dot I'd rather be able to have something that shows I've done more than one.  But that's just my opinion.  It was reinforced last week when someone new to our church was introduced to me since he was interested in tri's.. Turns out he signed up for IMKY and that is by his own words his first and only tri (also running race).  I'm not sure why that bothers me so much, but this guy went on and on telling everyone about his race next year...  It was a bit funny when I was asking about what type of training this guy was doing and he kept telling me that I wouldn't understand it, then a couple of friends asked "isnt' that the one you did last year?"   even then the guy wouldn't believe I do tri's.

sorry rant off...

this is going to be my tat after the holidays.

Like that Tat!  Funny, last week at Redman my wife was talking with a lady waiting on her husband and this was his first try.  We left around 10PM and she was still waiting.  I don't know why anyone would want to try an iron distance for their first triathlon...talk about a sufferfest!
