Sunny
Total Time = 3h 00m 24s
Overall Rank = 545/856
Age Group = Clydesdale <40
Age Group Rank = 15/25
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast - Vanilla Myoplex w/6oz pineapple juice. Coffee. Sipped on Gatorade. Didn't realize they closed the transition area so I rushed to set everything up. I still had over an hour until my wave started so I was disappointed I didn't quite have the time to setup my area.
Event warmup:

Watched the swim finish for about 30 minutes while I waited for my wave. Walked to swim start. About 20 minutes before start.
Swim
  • 25m 21s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 41s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not bad...If I actually trained for the swim, I could have been 2-3 minutes faster.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Navigate better. I was all over the place.
Transition 1
  • 03m 27s
Comments:

Not a bad transition BUT my suit was stuck on my right ankle. This was partly due to being a bit tired. Sat down instead of getting it off while standing.
What would you do differently?:

Get wetsuit off faster.
Bike
  • 1h 30m 42s
  • 41 kms
  • 27.12 km/hr
Comments:

Decent bike. Goal was sub 1:30. Close
What would you do differently?:

NEED TO TRAIN MORE ON THE BIKE!!! This is the area I need most improvement on. No question. I am not good on the bike...yet. Need more time in the saddle.
Transition 2
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

Couldn't find my rack. Since I was the last swim wave, most of the bikes were already back in transition and I had trouble finding mine. Went to the correct rack and thought it was wrong. Ran to the next, saw my bag at the other one and went back. I have no idea why I had so much trouble, but I did. Cost me at least a minute.
What would you do differently?:

Know my transition area better! Also, get yankz or elastic laces to save some time.
Run
  • 58m 33s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 52s  min/km
Comments:

The run was TOUGH. Hills were brutal.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. MORE BRICKS. At one point on the run, my quad was really tightening so at a water station, decided to stretch quad. Picked ankle up and hamstring immediately cramped. That sucked.
Post race
Warm down:

Looked around for finishers medal. They misplaced a box of them so a bunch of us in the back didn't get one.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training. Didn't train nearly enough for this. Only got serious about a month out if that. Disappointed in my prep for this. Bike is my weak link for sure. I can do so much better if I just apply myself in my training. A lot more biking outside and much less on the trainer. My goal is to drop 20 minutes for this race next year.

Event comments:

Great race. Tons of volunteers and couldn't have been run better (except for the lost medals). Very tough course. Definitely an accomplishment for anyone to finish this one. My entire lower body is sore today.

Great job!  Congratulations!

Were you in your Javelin duds?  I think I may have seen you on the bike course.

Yep...I'm sure you flew by me. Were you in them? Someone flew by and said "Go team Javelin" or something to the effect.

That was me.  I was cheating though--only had to do the bike so no worrying about that run.  "Go Team"

Good job Owen especally given your lack of training. Do you think YANKZ would really make a difference? Also, are you planning any other races? I too am shooting for sub 3hrs in my August Oly (Hartford) but the hills are killers. again congrats,
Mark

I think the yankz would have saved 15-20 seconds. I was shooting for sub 3 so I may have been able to eek it out if I didn't waste the time with the shoes. The biggest issue was missing the damn rack. Ugh.

Nothing else planned yet. I'm looking though. Moving the first weekend in July so you know the wife will make me do house stuff for AT LEAST a month.

Hey man, great race, you really smoked that swim! I didn't know the transition area closed at 7 either, I had plenty of time but when I heard the announcement I was thinking of guys like you that didn't start until after 8. If you're looking for another race, check out Escape from Fort Del on June 18th. Not sure if it's still open, but supposed to be a tough swim followed by a nice flat bike and run.

BTW, where are you moving? Still in Rockville?

Hey James...thanks! I've got you on the swim, now it's time to catch you on the bike and run. I've got a ways to go though!

Moving to Olney...just up the road.

I'll check out Escape from fort delaware for sure. Also have to see if I'm around, but that one might be doable (if it's still open).

Good to hear you're staying in the area and not moving to NoVA. Stay out of there

Let me know if you end up signing up for Fort Del. Should be a cool race. I got a kick out of this month's Metro Sports magazine, it said that Fort Del was for "experienced triathletes only". Got me a little worried, but whatever. As long as I don't drown, right?

Yeah, I heard the swim is fairly tough at Fort Del!

I work in Nova. That's enough for me!

You definitely did a great job on the tri based on the amount of training you were able to squeeze in, Owen! It's too early to call it the end of the season - commit to more races ASAP! Your bike needs you

Good luck with the move!

Great job Owen!! Sorry to read that you had so many leg cramps on the run and the transitions didn't go exactly how you wanted them to go... But, you have a great swim, bike and run regardless! A heck of a way to start your season. Congratulations. That was the first race that I've been to where they were starting swimming waves for almost 2 hours!!
